SuperDuty 4x4 gas mileage

I am thinking about buying/ordering a new 99 F250 SuperDuty 4x4 sometime in the near future and have some questions about gas mileage with the gas engines. I'm looking at both the V10 (with a 4.30 limited slip) and the V8 (with a 4.10 limited slip). I would probably go witht the 265/75R16 tires as well. Anyway, I was just wondering what kind of gas mileage I could expect out of a F250 SuperDuty 4x4 extended cab shortbox with either of these two engines.

Does anyone know of any changes for the SuperDuties in the 2000 model year?

One other question...I'm also considering a 99 F150 4x4 extended cab with the 5.4L V8 and off-road pkg. How would the F150 and the SuperDuty (with either engine) compare in terms of everyday driving (mainly acceleration, but other stuff like handling, etc)???

Thanks a lot for any info!!!

I have a '99 F-250 SD 4x4 SuperCab short bed with the 5.4L V-8 and 4.10LS. When my truck was stock (no superchip), I got around 9-10 mpg with 90% city driving, unloaded.

I have heard rumors that for 2000, the 5.4L engine will be 260hp, just like the F-150 is now, and the V-10 will be increased to 300hp. Like I said, this is a RUMOR, I have not seen anything from Ford confirming it.

I am the happy owner of a 99 250 SD Crew Cab Long Bed V-10 4-speed Automatic, 4.30 LS with 265/75 x 16 LT tires.
We bought it for towing and do very little "city" driving with it. However, I was quite suprised with the hiway mileage. Mine is a 4x2 and I get 14.2 cruising the freeways at 70-75 MPH. I took one trip through the desert (from Las Vegas to San Diego) avoiding the I road and just cruised at 55 MPH. The mileage went up to 15.5 MPG. (There was one short stretch when I took her up to 90+ when passing a string of motor homes wallowing up a 1% grade at 50 - but I kept the cruise control at 55 for the rest of the trip!)
Good luck to you. I know you'll love the V-10. It is sooooo smoooooth. Just step on it an hang on!!!

Matt, I haven't heard anyone with a 5.4L V8 say they're getting better mileage than the V10. This is a big, heavy duty truck....skip the V8. The F150 is much better riding than the SD. You're comparring a torsion bar front end to a live axle/leaf spring set up. Also, the SD is going to have stiff springs and E-ply rated tires. If ride quality and not towing heavy loads matter alot, then the F150 or even the LD F250 might be fine for your needs.

My SD F250, Crew Cab, 2x4, Auto, V10 gets 12-13mpg city. I haven't really been able to get highway miles because I'm usually towing something. Expect 10 mpg or less.

MattT - Since you sound like you might want a little more room in the cab, you might consider getting a Light Duty Crew Cab. Ford is coming out with them for the 2000 model year. I think a 5.4 in a Light Duty will give you better mileage. I had my Super Duty weighed - empty except for 2 people and a full gas tank (38 gal on the Crew Cab) - and it came to 6700 pounds! Over 3 tons without a load!! The F-350s have an even heavier frame! I bought mine for towing and the F-250 SD has a higher towing capacity than the F-350 because it's lighter. The GCVW is 20,000 pounds for both vehicles.
My friend got a 99 F-150 4x4 Extended Cab Short Bed with the 5.4 and paid about the same as I did. I don't have a 4x4 but he doesn't have the towing capacity. He can get his into his garage and mine sticks out three feet.
Decide what you want to do with your truck and then get one that'll do what you want. If your worried about gas mileage, don't get any truck.

I've got a '99 F-250 SD SC 4x4, and get (on average) 13 mpg. It has the 5.4 litre engine in it.

One thing I have noticed, when I put gas in by any company but texaco, gas milage goes up to around 14 mpg. I kept a log of my gas fillings & averages... you can get a look-see at http://members.home.net/kristopher/gasaverage.html

If you want handling and acceleration, go with the f150 with the 5.4 3.73 gears. You will feel so much power with the 260 hp under the hood. While the 5.4 for the superdutys has 235, less hp than the expeditions 4.6. The f150 with the 5.4 can do some towing, but if ya do heavy towing, go with the Superduty V10 or the PSD. If I had the money, I would get the PSD if I towed because I would love that 500 lb ft torque!

I have an F250 SD CC SWB 4x4 V10 with about 6700 miles on it now. I've made the San Diego - Las Vegas run on I15 about a half a dozen times in the past two months (just completed a move to Fallbrook). The first few times I was averaging about 80 - 85 mph and got a little over 12 mpg. I had a cab high cap installed in Escondido and on the return trip put the cruise control at 75 most of the way and got 14.3 mpg - not bad for such a beast. When I had the bed full of book boxes and a 12' Uhaul filled to the top with other household stuff (mostly heavy boxes also), I got about 10 mpg going 70 mph and hardly felt the load I was pulling. I was still passing small cars on the uphill grades.

MattT,

I also have a land yacht with the 5.4L. I just checked my mileage. 11.3 with a heavy foot. It's hard to take it easy when you drive by the rules of MY road."yield to the bigger vehicle" It probably weighs 6500# with gas, gear, and me. Highway has GOT to be better.

The F150 and F250LD are like the 5.0 Mustang or the IROC Camaro...ANYONE and everyone has one.
On the otherhand, the SD is not for the mileage folks. I pay 97 cents a gallon right now so I can't complain.

This is my opinion.

That's about what I'm getting. Dropping my "cruise" speed to 55 (and getting off the I-road ) my mileage improved to 15.5 MPG.
I've got a 4x2 - not a 4x4.

Mikey43 -
That's pretty much how I felt about FL - the first year was fine but hated all the remaining years...

My 99 PSD CrewCab Shortbed 4x4 7680lbs empty gets about 14.5 mpg at an average speed of 85 mph (Las Vegas to Bakersfield 285 miles in 3 hours 20 minutes). When I drop out of WARP speed, and travel at the posted limits, I get about 16.5 mpg. I love this truck.
