My engine rpm with 4.10 gears - with pics

I've spoken to a few folks who think that short gears will give these trucks a top speed of 90mph at redline, and will kill your mpg. I think it stems from the old days, when cars had narrow-range 3-speed trannies, and not wide-range overdrive units.

IMHO these trucks love short gears.
My mpg didn't changed noticably.
But your results may vary.

Here are some pics of my speedo at various higway speeds.
I run 4.10 gears with 285-60R18 street tires...the equivalent of about a 31-inch tire.

Sorry for the low quality...my cameraphone is teh suck.

Yes but I should have noted that my speedo reads about 4% fast.
Not too significant.

So 80mph indicated is really about 77
60mph indicated is really about 57
70mph indicated is really about 67

Nice post
I love my 410s. With my 23"wheels that are about 32 inches overall I run 2200 RPMs at 75. With my stock tires on 16" rimes I run about 2400 RPMs at 75 MPH.

Nice post Jordan...

I have the 4.10s with 32" tires and haven't noticed much of a difference in gas mileage either...these gears really picked up performance on my truck, especially on take off...

so if i have stock 3.55's and put on 32.7" tires over the stock 31.6, 4.10's should lower my rpms?

I currently run around 1900rpms at 70mph and around 2200 close to 80mph. This would come down with 4.10s?

97f150f/s,

With 4.1 gears and 32.7 inch tall tires your rpms at 70 mph should be 2065.
At 80 mph it should be 2360 rpm.

97,

I wouldn't dismiss the gears, they multiply the torque to the wheels. Around town your truck will be peppier and if you can resist the urge to nail it you MPG may stay the same. On the highway it will be turning less than 150 more rpm but it will be higher up in the torque range where the engine can make more power. Don't forget your bigger tires are heavier so they require more power to turn.
