2018 Ford F-150 Review Proves the 2.7 Is No Slouch

2018 Ford F-150 Review Proves the 2.7 Is No Slouch

By -

Even the V8 faithful have to admit that the 2.7 Ecoboost is one heck of a fun little motor.

Among the disgruntled, old school truck set (including us), you won’t find many who’ll admit they’d ever consider buying a V6-powered 2018 Ford F-150. We tend to stick to our guns on this subject, maybe a little too hard. But after checking out this excellent, detailed video from Redline Reviews, we’re  beginning to think that perhaps we’re being a little too hard on the Ecoboost crowd.

The reviewer does say that the 2.7 Ecoboost “doesn’t sound like much, but it’s a very refined, very quiet engine. Just don’t expect it to sound like that big, burly truck V8.” Which we already know. And that’s perhaps our biggest complaint about these little motors, as they just don’t sound like truck engines. But apparently, the revised 2.7 sure goes like one.

With a 5.0-liter matching 400 lb-ft of torque and only 4,800 pounds to carry around, the reviewer sure does seem to enjoy his test drive. When paired with the new 10-speed automatic transmission, this is almost a hot rod of a truck. In fact, he even says the little motor feels “stronger than the Tundra and the Titan with their big, burly V8s.” Which is no surprise, really, given the Tundra’s similar power figures. But it also doesn’t get 24 miles per gallon on the highway, either.

Heck, he even notes that the 2018 Ford F-150 has “relatively playful” handling that makes it the “sportiest handling truck in the segment.” With “effortless” power from the little Ecoboost V6, you could almost call the 2018 Ford F-150 a spirited driver. And when was the last time you could say that about a tiny-engined, plain old, full-size, luxury-trimmed half-ton pickup truck?
