Retro Monday: Classic Ford Trucks Commercial is Hilariously NSW

By -

Second part of this video is not a spoof, Ford actually recorded this profanity-laced spot in the 1980s.

Over the years, Ford has made some great truck commercials and Chevrolet has made some less-than-great truck commercials that, oddly, tend to focus on Ford trucks. In the modern era of advertising, Chevrolet has their “real people” spots, where do things like disguise a Chevy as a Ford and surprise the crowd while in others, the automaker drops paver bricks from a loader into an unprotected pickup bed in order to slander Ford’s shift to aluminum.

Back in the 1980s, Chevy was making similar ads that took shots at Ford, so when actor Michael Skewes worked with the Motor Company to create television commercials for the F-Series trucks sold in the late 1980s and early 1990s, they made a special clip. Needless to say, it didn’t air on television and even today, we have to warn you not to watch this video artwork with the sound up, as it is humorously vulgar.

Original Ford Stunts Commercial

The video above comes from the “rbflds” YouTube channel and it features Skewes talking about the eighth generation Ford F-Series. As he walks around the front of a then-new F-150, he talks about all of the stunts that Chevrolet includes in their commercials, pointing out that Ford had built the bestselling large truck with the F-150 and the bestselling small truck for more than a decade when this clip was first aired in 1991.

Like most Ford truck commercials, Skewes stuck to talking about what the Motor Company does well while the competitors focus on stunts. Really, it is a fairly unremarkable video, shy of calling out Chevrolet without doing so by name.

The Parody

After the actual commercial plays, we get to watch the parody, in which Skewes is honest with his views on the competitor’s commercials. He films the outtake with a cigarette in his hand, occasionally taking a drag between lines.

As soon as he reads his first line, it is clear that this is not your average Ford truck commercial, asking if we can “believe the bullshit that Chevy is putting in their spots lately”. He doesn’t go into detail, but he reiterates that Ford builds America’s bestselling trucks, going so far as tell us to “piss on Chevy”.

If you have seen the parody version before, you like thought that it was edited or simply a spoof, but it is actually footage filmed and produced by Ford Motor Company, so crank up your speakers and enjoy. Then again, if you are in a crowded workplace, this video might be better enjoyed at home.

"Before I was old enough to walk, my dad was taking me to various types of racing events, from local drag racing to the Daytona 500," says Patrick Rall, a lifetime automotive expert, diehard Dodge fan, and respected auto journalist for over 10 years. "He owned a repair shop and had a variety of performance cars when I was young, but by the time I was 16, he was ready to build me my first drag car – a 1983 Dodge Mirada that ran low 12s. I spent 10 years traveling around the country, racing with my dad by my side. While we live in different areas of the country, my dad still drag races at 80 years old in the car that he built when I was 16 while I race other vehicles, including my 2017 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and my 1972 Dodge Demon 340.

"Although I went to college for accounting, my time in my dad’s shop growing up allowed me the knowledge to spend time working as a mechanic before getting my accounting degree, at which point I worked in the office of a dealership group. While I was working in the accounting world, I continued racing and taking pictures of cars at the track. Over time, I began showing off those pictures online and that led to my writing.

"Ten years ago, I left the accounting world to become a full-time automotive writer and I am living proof that if you love what you do, you will never “work” a day in your life," adds Rall, who has clocked in time as an auto mechanic, longtime drag racer and now automotive journalist who contributes to nearly a dozen popular auto websites dedicated to fellow enthusiasts.

"I love covering the automotive industry and everything involved with the job. I was fortunate to turn my love of the automotive world into a hobby that led to an exciting career, with my past of working as a mechanic and as an accountant in the automotive world provides me with a unique perspective of the industry.

"My experience drag racing for more than 20 years coupled with a newfound interest in road racing over the past decade allows me to push performance cars to their limit, while my role as a horse stable manager gives me vast experience towing and hauling with all of the newest trucks on the market today.

"Being based on Detroit," says Rall, "I never miss the North American International Auto Show, the Woodward Dream Cruise and Roadkill Nights, along with spending plenty of time raising hell on Detroit's Woodward Avenue with the best muscle car crowd in the world.
