Custom Excursion Blends Show Truck Looks with Family Space

Owner of award-winning Excursion didn’t build it to be a show truck, but folks all over the country have been wowed by his creation.

If you were to see a brown Ford Excursion with a two-tone flame paint job on 26-inch wheels rolling down the road, you’d definitely remember it. And there’s a possibility you have. It’s called “Bigg Brown” and its owner has taken it and his family from one truck show to another across the U.S.

Bigg Brown’s owner, Brad Bosman, originally set out to turn his 2001 Ford Ranger into a head-turning minitruck called “22 Below.” But then he suddenly had something much more important to do: start a family. He didn’t give up on his dream of creating an awesome custom vehicle, though. In the video above, Bosman tells the YouTube channel GrinderTV, “I wanted to do something unique so I had a Titan or an Excursion in mind.” Given how many Chevys there were in the custom truck scene and his standing connection with Ford, he opted for the Blue Oval’s people mover.

After buying a 2001 Excursion from a Craigslist user, he didn’t wait long before dropping it off at a custom shop for a complete makeover. “The 26s were one of the first things that we got on the 305/30/26 tire.” Those would end up looking even more massive because Bosman had every intention of slamming his roughly 8,000-pound build down low on an air suspension.

When it came time for Bosman to pick a color scheme, he brought his work home with him – literally. He’s a UPS driver and fell in love with the combination of brown and gold, hence the name “Bigg Brown.” Bosman added a twist, though. Instead of gold and ghost flames, Bosman decided to go with gold and copper flames and have them intertwine with each other.

The interior was a bit more problematic. One shop wasted three months of Bosman’s time. Once he found the right place to redo the inside of his Excursion, they gave him his money’s worth. The cabin of Bosman’s Excursion is an eye-pleasing mix of quilted saddle-color leather, metallic trim, and audio hardware.

Under the hood, there’s Ford’s 6.8-liter V10. If Bosman had gotten an Excursion with the 7.3-liter Power Stroke diesel V8, he probably would be getting better than the 14 mpg he currently gets, but that doesn’t stop him from taking Bigg Brown and his wife and children all over the U.S. “It drives to Texas, Vegas, California. I’ve driven to every [truck] show we’ve gone to.” In this video alone, he goes to several states, including California and Louisiana. He even goes as far north as Canada.

Bigg Brown has gone further than just picturesque American locales, though. Bosman’s vision of a dream build has been on the cover of Truckin magazine and in the top spot at various truck shows.

Derek Shiekhi's father raised him on cars. As a boy, Derek accompanied his dad as he bought classics such as post-WWII GM trucks and early Ford Mustang convertibles.

After loving cars for years and getting a bachelor's degree in Business Management, Derek decided to get an associate degree in journalism. His networking put him in contact with the editor of the Austin-American Statesman newspaper, who hired him to write freelance about automotive culture and events in Austin, Texas in 2013. One particular story led to him getting a certificate for learning the foundations of road racing.

While watching TV with his parents one fateful evening, he saw a commercial that changed his life. In it, Jeep touted the Wrangler as the Texas Auto Writers Association's "SUV of Texas." Derek knew he had to join the organization if he was going to advance as an automotive writer. He joined the Texas Auto Writers Association (TAWA) in 2014 and was fortunate to meet several nice people who connected him to the representatives of several automakers and the people who could give him access to press vehicles (the first one he ever got the keys to was a Lexus LX 570). He's now a regular at TAWA's two main events: the Texas Auto Roundup in the spring and the Texas Truck Rodeo in the fall.

Over the past several years, Derek has learned how to drive off-road in various four-wheel-drive SUVs (he even camped out for two nights in a Land Rover), and driven around various tracks in hot hatches, muscle cars, and exotics. Several of his pieces, including his article about the 2015 Ford F-150 being crowned TAWA's 2014 "Truck of Texas" and his review of the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider, have won awards in TAWA's annual Excellence in Craft Competition. Last year, his JK Forum profile of Wagonmaster, a business that restores Jeep Wagoneers, won prizes in TAWA’s signature writing contest and its pickup- and SUV-focused Texas Truck Invitational.

In addition to writing for a variety of Internet Brands sites, including JK Forum and Ford Truck Enthusiasts, Derek also contributes to other outlets. He started There Will Be Cars on Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube to get even more automotive content out to fellow enthusiasts.
