F-150 Lays Down 517 Horsepower on the Dyno

F-150 features the 5.0-liter V8 engine and a Roush supercharger.

In 2011, the 5.0-liter “Coyote” V8 replaced the two older V8 options in the Ford F-150 lineup, effectively killing-off the 4.6-liter 3-valve engine and the 5.4-liter mill. In stock form, the 5.0 is a great engine, but thanks to the fact that a very similar engine is used in the Ford Mustang GT, there is an endless aftermarket to make your F-150 a whole lot quicker.

The truck in the video above from the Serious HP YouTube channel is a fine example of that, as by adding a Roush supercharger and a good tune, the output climbs well into the 500 range in terms of both torque and horsepower.

The Boosted F-150

When this Ford F-150 rolled off of the factory assembly line, the stock 5.0-liter V8 offered 360 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque at the crankshaft. If we assume an 18% drivetrain loss factory, a stock half-ton from the 12th generation with the Coyote engine would have laid down around 306 horsepower and 323 lb-ft of torque. However, this F-150 is not stock, and it makes a whole lot more power.

Unfortunately, there is no modification list for this truck, but we know from the title that it has a Roush supercharger and we can see towards the end of the video that it also has a Roush air induction system. Finally, it sounds a little louder than a stock truck, so we are going to assume that it has some sort of exhaust upgrades, but we don’t know the extent of those upgrades.

Finally, this F-150 has aftermarket wheels and what appears to be wider-than-stock tires, which help with traction on the street and on the Dynojet rollers.

Making Big Power

The video is short, with the F-150 making a hard pull on the dyno followed by a close-up look at the readout. We see figures of 516.49 horsepower and 514.75 lb-ft of torque at the wheels. The baseline dyno on the sheet was made with the supercharger, but without the Serious HP tune, and it “only” delivered 430.45 horsepower and 491.99 lb-ft of torque, so the new tune added 86 horsepower and 24 lb-ft of torque at the wheels.

If we compare these newly tuned numbers to the stock figures above, the supercharger and the other, unknown upgrades added over 200 wheel horsepower and nearly 200 lb-ft of wheel torque.

Needless to say, if you have a 5.0-liter-powered Ford F-150 and you want big power, the Roush supercharger setup appears to be a pretty solid option.

"Before I was old enough to walk, my dad was taking me to various types of racing events, from local drag racing to the Daytona 500," says Patrick Rall, a lifetime automotive expert, diehard Dodge fan, and respected auto journalist for over 10 years. "He owned a repair shop and had a variety of performance cars when I was young, but by the time I was 16, he was ready to build me my first drag car – a 1983 Dodge Mirada that ran low 12s. I spent 10 years traveling around the country, racing with my dad by my side. While we live in different areas of the country, my dad still drag races at 80 years old in the car that he built when I was 16 while I race other vehicles, including my 2017 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and my 1972 Dodge Demon 340.

"Although I went to college for accounting, my time in my dad’s shop growing up allowed me the knowledge to spend time working as a mechanic before getting my accounting degree, at which point I worked in the office of a dealership group. While I was working in the accounting world, I continued racing and taking pictures of cars at the track. Over time, I began showing off those pictures online and that led to my writing.

"Ten years ago, I left the accounting world to become a full-time automotive writer and I am living proof that if you love what you do, you will never “work” a day in your life," adds Rall, who has clocked in time as an auto mechanic, longtime drag racer and now automotive journalist who contributes to nearly a dozen popular auto websites dedicated to fellow enthusiasts.

"I love covering the automotive industry and everything involved with the job. I was fortunate to turn my love of the automotive world into a hobby that led to an exciting career, with my past of working as a mechanic and as an accountant in the automotive world provides me with a unique perspective of the industry.

"My experience drag racing for more than 20 years coupled with a newfound interest in road racing over the past decade allows me to push performance cars to their limit, while my role as a horse stable manager gives me vast experience towing and hauling with all of the newest trucks on the market today.

"Being based on Detroit," says Rall, "I never miss the North American International Auto Show, the Woodward Dream Cruise and Roadkill Nights, along with spending plenty of time raising hell on Detroit's Woodward Avenue with the best muscle car crowd in the world.
