Wild F-350 Owner Drives Onto the Roof of an Old Barn

By -

Instead of using his F-350 to pull this dilapidated barn down, Cody Detwiler of WhistlinDiesel drives up a ramp and crushes it from the top.

Back in September, we told you about a beat-up old Ford F-350 named “Carl” that had 500,000 lumens of light bars bolted onto it. Carl’s owner, Cody Detwiler, the fun-loving madman behind the YouTube channel WhistlinDiesel, used Carl to take part in a (well-lit) nighttime water balloon fight. That wasn’t the only crazy thing they’ve done together, though. Check out what they do to this hog barn.

If you look long enough on YouTube, you’ll find several videos of people yanking derelict barns down with their trucks. The 30′ X 10′ one you see here is way beyond saving. It’s buckled or completely disintegrated in more than one spot. The doors and windows are long gone. The ends of some of the rafters don’t have any load-bearing structure to rest on. Detwiler decides to speed up the doomed edifice’s decaying by driving Carl up onto its roof.

With the barn in the horrid shape that it’s in, it won’t take much to do some serious damage to it. Carl is well prepared to put a hurting on it. The old F-350 has a chunky front winch, a heavy 460-cubic-inch V8, and 40-inch tires. That should do the trick.

Detwiler may be wild, but he’s not clueless. He knows how dangerous what he’s about to do is. Standing on the roof of the barn, he says, “There’s a very good chance someone’s going to get sent to the emergency room tonight.” That doesn’t deter him, though. Detwiler fires Carl up and slowly drives up a makeshift ramp and onto the roof.

Before Carl’s rear tires clear the ramp, the top of the dying building caves in under the weight of Carl’s front end. It only gets uglier the further he goes. The metal curls up like a rusty wave in Carl’s wake.

At one point in what could be the most unique thing an F-350 has ever done, Detwiler and Carl reach a point where the roof can hold up their weight. Detwiler emerges from his truck screaming with delight. He goes to the ground to admire his progress. “That is so cool. That building is supporting an entire truck right now.”

While backing Carl down from his hero pose, Detwiler drops one of his wheels off the side of the roof. He gets temporarily stuck, but it’s not a problem that plenty of throttle can’t fix. Detwiler rocks Carl and powers out of the barn’s clutches.

Back on solid ground, it sinks in that Detwiler was right about someone having to get medical treatment because of his stunt. That “someone” is Carl. Detwiler says, “That was super hard on the truck.” Carl’s rooftop antics caused him to pop a tire, spring a couple of leaks, and lose his brakes and steering.

Derek Shiekhi's father raised him on cars. As a boy, Derek accompanied his dad as he bought classics such as post-WWII GM trucks and early Ford Mustang convertibles.

After loving cars for years and getting a bachelor's degree in Business Management, Derek decided to get an associate degree in journalism. His networking put him in contact with the editor of the Austin-American Statesman newspaper, who hired him to write freelance about automotive culture and events in Austin, Texas in 2013. One particular story led to him getting a certificate for learning the foundations of road racing.

While watching TV with his parents one fateful evening, he saw a commercial that changed his life. In it, Jeep touted the Wrangler as the Texas Auto Writers Association's "SUV of Texas." Derek knew he had to join the organization if he was going to advance as an automotive writer. He joined the Texas Auto Writers Association (TAWA) in 2014 and was fortunate to meet several nice people who connected him to the representatives of several automakers and the people who could give him access to press vehicles (the first one he ever got the keys to was a Lexus LX 570). He's now a regular at TAWA's two main events: the Texas Auto Roundup in the spring and the Texas Truck Rodeo in the fall.

Over the past several years, Derek has learned how to drive off-road in various four-wheel-drive SUVs (he even camped out for two nights in a Land Rover), and driven around various tracks in hot hatches, muscle cars, and exotics. Several of his pieces, including his article about the 2015 Ford F-150 being crowned TAWA's 2014 "Truck of Texas" and his review of the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider, have won awards in TAWA's annual Excellence in Craft Competition. Last year, his JK Forum profile of Wagonmaster, a business that restores Jeep Wagoneers, won prizes in TAWA’s signature writing contest and its pickup- and SUV-focused Texas Truck Invitational.

In addition to writing for a variety of Internet Brands sites, including JK Forum and Ford Truck Enthusiasts, Derek also contributes to other outlets. He started There Will Be Cars on Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube to get even more automotive content out to fellow enthusiasts.
