Ford F-150 Tops Most Popular New and Used Vehicle List
Ford’s perennial best-selling F-150 isn’t just a vehicle of choice in rural areas, but also major metros in America.
The Ford F-150 has dominated the sales charts longer than many people have been alive these days. Forty-three years, to be exact. So we weren’t terribly surprised when we learned that the F-150 also dominated the 2019 Most Popular New and Used Vehicles list from iSeeCars. But there were some surprising tidbits contained within this fascinating data, mind you. And that makes this extensive study well worth diving into.
To find out which vehicles Americans love the most, iSeeCars analyzed over 8.9 million used car sales from the last five model years (2014-2018) and over 10.9 million new car sales in 2019. What they found, overall, was that trucks are obviously our vehicle of choice. But one truck in particular, the F-150, has a stranglehold on both new and used vehicle sales. And this isn’t just relegated to rural parts of the country, either.
The F-150 topped iSeeCars’ most popular new vehicle by state by a landslide. In fact, it claimed the title in 22 out of 50 states. The second-place Chevy Silverado topped nine states, while the GMC Sierra 1500 and the Toyota Tacoma took one state each. The F-150 was even more dominant in terms of used vehicle sales. There it claimed 32 states, while the Silverado managed just five. Just take a look at the chart above. If the F-150 was running for president, we wouldn’t even have to consult the electoral college.
None of this is terribly surprising, however. What we did find to be rather interesting was iSeeCars data relating to new and used vehicle sales in the top 50 metro areas of the U.S. You wouldn’t expect full-size pickups to be the vehicle of choice for city dwellers. But the F-150’s dominance carries over there as well. It was the most popular used vehicle in nearly half of those areas (23). And it claimed the new vehicle sales crown in 20 of 50 metros.
According to iSeeCars CEO Phong Ly, this interesting trend can be attributed to the F-150’s versatility. “While pickup trucks are commonly known as being work vehicles, they have evolved to be popular family haulers as well thanks to their abundant cargo room and safety features,” he said. Ly also noted that the F-150 is a “popular work vehicle or family vehicle for those who want something more rugged than an SUV or minivan.”
Over the years, Ford’s F-150 has evolved into a vehicle that can truly do everything well. And that quality figures to only extend its dominance of the new and used vehicle markets for many years to come.
