Only three years have passed since Ford first introduced the world to the EcoBoost F-150. At the time, it was a risky move. People were skeptical of the EcoBoost’s reliability under the heavy stresses of pick up truck duty. They were worried the plucky little 3.5-liter V6 wouldn’t be a viable alternative to the V8. Understandably, this was a big change in a time of disorder in the automotive industry. Ford’s gambit with the EcoBoost was also their first step towards a turbo friendly future.
Now that Ford has moved their 500,000th EcoBoost F-150, I think it’s safe to say that the EcoBoost was a good move. Next year Ford will expand their line-up to include a smaller 2.7-liter turbocharged V6. You can bet they made that decision on the success of the 3.5-liter v6. In fact, the new motor will find it’s way into the 2015 Mustang as well.
So three cheers for the EcoBoost! This is only the beginning.
