Artist Imagines Next-Gen "Retro" F-150 Redesign

A digital artist shows us what is and what should never be.

Retro styling may be all the rage when it comes to cars, but truck designers seem to be looking firmly into the future. As trucks get bigger and more modern looking, one artist decided to see what a retro Ford F-150 might look like.

Known as @wb.artist20 on Instagram,  Oscar V. is a wizard in Photoshop. His specialty is re-imagining what new cars would look like with classic flavor — or, imagining what classics would look like if they were brought into the modern age. His latest creation is the former, a modern F-150 with styling cues inspired by Ford trucks of the late 1970s.

The overall shape of the grille and headlight housings are the same, but instead of modern composite lamps, you’ll find large, round, retro-styled LED headlights. The extra space around the lights is filled with slats that continue the throwback theme of the grille. The chrome trim around the perimeter is another classic touch. Our favorite part is the retro “F O R D” lettering in the grille.

Old-School Details

That chrome trim continues around the rest of the truck, front to rear. The high-mounted side marker lights solve a problem created by the replacement of the composite headlamps. They’re also a total throwback to classic Ford pickup designs. From the bed side, we can see that the taillights have been changed, too. While we can’t see the rendering from the back, we’re certain the long, thin taillights of the classic F-150 have been modernized for this application.

Another classic touch is the big chrome bumper. We’re not sure it would pass federal crash safety standards these days, but we can dream. Even the stock plastic mirrors have been replaced with old-school chrome units.

No detail was left untouched. The F-150’s large-diameter aluminum spoke wheels have been swapped for some classic ten-hole wheels with white stripe tires. As good as it looks, that’s another detail that we doubt would see production.

🧐Here’s my edit of a current F-150 retrofitted to look like it was built in the 70’s. I’ve been wondering what it would look like to do the opposite of modernizing. I think a visit to your local @pepboysauto can get a lot of this look accomplished! Oh and if this made you do a double take then mission accomplished! 😁 • • • • •#ford #f150 #f100 #classicford #retromod #retrofit #redesign #redesign #automotivedesign #cardesigner #cardesigncommunity #cardesignerscommunity #fordpickup #truckporndaily #trucksofinstagram #truckinaround @truckporn @truck.society @1320video #fordtruck @classics_culture

Overall though, we do like this flight of fancy. While it will likely never become a reality, we can still enjoy it thanks to the wonders of Photoshop and the considerable talents of wb.artist20.
