Ninth-gen Ford F-150 Packs Big Power into a Beautiful Package

By -

F-150 is powered by a 5.8-liter V8 that is topped by a Vortech supercharger, creating a wicked burnout machine.

When it comes to Ford F-150 pickups that can do righteous burnouts, there are few that came from the factory with more tire-slaying ability than those equipped with the SVT Lightning package. The Lightning was first introduced for the 1993 model year during the ninth-generation, but when the supercharged version hit the market in 1999, a star was born. The SVT F-150 would serve as the quickest and fastest half-ton truck in the world for years and today, it is still one of the most respected factory performance trucks ever.

The truck in the video above looks somewhat like an SVT pickup and it is packing a supercharged 5.8-liter V8, but we don’t think that it came from the factory with the Lightning package. Instead, someone has taken a very clear ninth-generation F-150 and transformed it into a wicked performance truck.

F-150, Not a Lightning

This gorgeous ninth-generation Ford F-150 was featured by our friends at Ford-Trucks.com a while back and when it was discussed there, the information accompanying the video was a bit different. At this point, there is no information in the title or details, but when it was showcased at Ford-Trucks, the video title claimed that it was a Lightning and the details explained that it is powered by a 5.8-liter V8 topped by a Vortech V2 supercharger.

At this point, the only bit of information that remains is the fact that it is supercharged. We don’t know why the other engine information was removed and we can imagine that the El Guru Garage YouTube channel removed the Lightning name from the title because this F-150 does not appear to be an SVT production.

For those wondering how we know that this probably isn’t a factory Lightning, the first-generation of the SVT pickup was not offered with the flareside bed design, nor did it come with a chrome front bumper. Also, where this truck has badges that read “Flare Side”, a proper SVT F-150 would have a Lightning badge on the fenders, so while this is a very nice sixth gen F-Series, it is not a Lightning.

Big Blower Power

Again, there are no details with this video, but we know from the piece on Ford-Trucks that this F-150 is powered by a 5.8-liter V8 that is topped with a Vortech V2 supercharger. We don’t know if it is an 5.8 from the ninth-generation or if the mill came from a newer truck, but with the supercharger, it is safe to assume that this F-150 makes far more power than any stock Lightning. In fact, when sitting at idle prior to the burnout, it sounds like it could be cammed as well, so this truck could pack more power than we are imagining.

In any case, the gorgeous blue F-150 roasts the tires for about 20 seconds, creating a huge cloud of smoke with the perfect accompaniment of the blown V8.

"Before I was old enough to walk, my dad was taking me to various types of racing events, from local drag racing to the Daytona 500," says Patrick Rall, a lifetime automotive expert, diehard Dodge fan, and respected auto journalist for over 10 years. "He owned a repair shop and had a variety of performance cars when I was young, but by the time I was 16, he was ready to build me my first drag car – a 1983 Dodge Mirada that ran low 12s. I spent 10 years traveling around the country, racing with my dad by my side. While we live in different areas of the country, my dad still drag races at 80 years old in the car that he built when I was 16 while I race other vehicles, including my 2017 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and my 1972 Dodge Demon 340.

"Although I went to college for accounting, my time in my dad’s shop growing up allowed me the knowledge to spend time working as a mechanic before getting my accounting degree, at which point I worked in the office of a dealership group. While I was working in the accounting world, I continued racing and taking pictures of cars at the track. Over time, I began showing off those pictures online and that led to my writing.

"Ten years ago, I left the accounting world to become a full-time automotive writer and I am living proof that if you love what you do, you will never “work” a day in your life," adds Rall, who has clocked in time as an auto mechanic, longtime drag racer and now automotive journalist who contributes to nearly a dozen popular auto websites dedicated to fellow enthusiasts.

"I love covering the automotive industry and everything involved with the job. I was fortunate to turn my love of the automotive world into a hobby that led to an exciting career, with my past of working as a mechanic and as an accountant in the automotive world provides me with a unique perspective of the industry.

"My experience drag racing for more than 20 years coupled with a newfound interest in road racing over the past decade allows me to push performance cars to their limit, while my role as a horse stable manager gives me vast experience towing and hauling with all of the newest trucks on the market today.

"Being based on Detroit," says Rall, "I never miss the North American International Auto Show, the Woodward Dream Cruise and Roadkill Nights, along with spending plenty of time raising hell on Detroit's Woodward Avenue with the best muscle car crowd in the world.
