‘Snobs’ Ditching Luxury Cars for Ford Trucks

Ford Trucks

Today’s Ford trucks aren’t just the best trucks on the road. They’re the best vehicles, period.

The fact that folks are ditching their sedans and coupes for trucks isn’t really a surprise. Today’s Ford trucks are, after all, capable of doing pretty much everything. And now that trucks are every bit as comfortable and feature-rich as even the best luxury cars, brands like Lexus and BMW are losing customers left and right. It seemed improbable just a few years ago, but trucks are the new preferred luxury vehicle.

Puzzling though it may seem at first, this mass exodus is happening for a reason. And we stumbled across a perfect real world example in this Reddit post. Here, a self-described “German car snob” ended 15 years of luxury car ownership by purchasing a 2017 Ford F-150. He wanted something that could double as a daily driver and a tow vehicle that would also hold its value. He landed on an XLT model with the 3.5 liter Ecoboost

The most interesting part of all this is the fact that our newly converted truck owner was floored by his new vehicle. He sums up his feelings quite succinctly, in fact. “Holy wow this is a nice car and that engine is crazy good.” He also finds that the F-150 surprisingly holds its own again the “elite” German competition. In every single category.

“It’s fast – 0-60 in like 5.6 seconds, just 0.5 seconds slower than my X6 with the twin-turbo V8. And just as fast as the GL450, which also has a twin-turbo V8. I’m getting close to 20 mpg with mostly city driving. That’s almost double what I was getting with the X6, and within 1 mpg of the Mini. It’s SUPER quiet on the highway. Noticeably quieter than the GL450 and the X6. To top it off, it pulls my 6,800 lbs trailer with no problem whatsoever. I think it helps that the 10-speed transmission is smooth as butter.”

Not too shabby for a pickup truck. Of course, there are a few areas where the F-150 falls short. Namely the wider turning radius and Sync’s less-than-ideal operation. But outside of those two little quirks, the new Ford truck more than holds its own against the German competition. We never thought we’d see a day when we’d be comparing Ford trucks with luxury cars. But the F-150 has evolved to the point where it’s quite simply the best vehicle on the road. Not just the best truck.
