Supercharged Ford F-150 Runs a 9-Second Quarter Mile

All Ford trucks are made to get work done. This F-150’s only job is completing a quarter mile as quickly as possible.

Drag racers who compete with Ford F-150s typically get their trucks with the two same characteristics: a single cab and the 5.0-liter Coyote V8. Then they usually add some type of forced induction.

But the results aren’t always the same. Some trucks are faster than others. It’s all a matter of final output, transmission tuning, tires, driver response time, and a hundred other things. The person behind the wheel of the Ford F-150 in this video from High Tech Corvette clearly has things figured out.

Aside from its red paint (and ovals) and the Lightning badges on its front fenders, this F-150 is visually low-key. Key word: Visually. It’s not blasting fire out of a pipe exiting from one of its front fenders. There aren’t rubber steamrollers under the rear wheel arches. There’s no parachute hanging off the tailgate. In fact, there’s no tailgate at all.

It’s a different story under the hood. An ominous black supercharger sits on top of the Coyote V8 and pumps boost through its predator veins.

However much that happens to be, let’s just say that it’s enough for the F-150 to make some blistering passes on the drag strip. The slowest of those is against a ’90s Pontiac Firebird. Soon after starting down the track, the F-150 tries to put down a little too much power at once and spins its rear tires. It quickly regains its grip and bolts forward. Despite that momentary slip, the F-150 still manages to beat the F-Body by a huge margin. It finishes the quarter mile in 10.576 seconds at 144.77 mph. The Pontiac clocks a 10.993 at 131.24 mph.

With only itself to compete with, the F-150 crosses the line in 9.413 seconds at 146.50 mph. Oddly enough, the F-150 does its best when it’s lined up against another Ford. In this case, it’s a yellow New Edge Mustang that was clearly built for quarter miles. The pony car suffers some sort of injury that prevents it from reaching a full gallop. Whatever its affliction is, it’s not contagious because the F-150 charges ahead without hesitation. The “Lightning” flashes across the line 9.239 seconds later doing 146.11 mph.

There are a lot of moving parts in every drag machine. Whoever put this F-150 together found a way to make them all work together at peak efficiency and with maximum effectiveness.

Derek Shiekhi's father raised him on cars. As a boy, Derek accompanied his dad as he bought classics such as post-WWII GM trucks and early Ford Mustang convertibles.

After loving cars for years and getting a bachelor's degree in Business Management, Derek decided to get an associate degree in journalism. His networking put him in contact with the editor of the Austin-American Statesman newspaper, who hired him to write freelance about automotive culture and events in Austin, Texas in 2013. One particular story led to him getting a certificate for learning the foundations of road racing.

While watching TV with his parents one fateful evening, he saw a commercial that changed his life. In it, Jeep touted the Wrangler as the Texas Auto Writers Association's "SUV of Texas." Derek knew he had to join the organization if he was going to advance as an automotive writer. He joined the Texas Auto Writers Association (TAWA) in 2014 and was fortunate to meet several nice people who connected him to the representatives of several automakers and the people who could give him access to press vehicles (the first one he ever got the keys to was a Lexus LX 570). He's now a regular at TAWA's two main events: the Texas Auto Roundup in the spring and the Texas Truck Rodeo in the fall.

Over the past several years, Derek has learned how to drive off-road in various four-wheel-drive SUVs (he even camped out for two nights in a Land Rover), and driven around various tracks in hot hatches, muscle cars, and exotics. Several of his pieces, including his article about the 2015 Ford F-150 being crowned TAWA's 2014 "Truck of Texas" and his review of the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider, have won awards in TAWA's annual Excellence in Craft Competition. Last year, his JK Forum profile of Wagonmaster, a business that restores Jeep Wagoneers, won prizes in TAWA’s signature writing contest and its pickup- and SUV-focused Texas Truck Invitational.

In addition to writing for a variety of Internet Brands sites, including JK Forum and Ford Truck Enthusiasts, Derek also contributes to other outlets. He started There Will Be Cars on Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube to get even more automotive content out to fellow enthusiasts.
