Thieves in Canada Are Targeting the F-Series
The 2003 – 2007 F-350 models are the most likely to get stolen.
The most outrageously popular consumer-level motor vehicle in human history is also — at least in Canada — the most coveted by thieves. Everybody knows Ford’s F-Series pickup trucks have enduring appeal among casual motorists and those who rely on their trucks for work. But what’s the deal with car thieves targeting this truck, specifically? Let’s dive in.
According to the U.K.’s Globe and Mail, several Ford F-Series models absolutely dominated the list of Canada’s most frequently stolen vehicles in 2019, 2018 and years going back even further. Ford’s presence on the list was especially pronounced in 2018. Interestingly, Canadian auto thefts in general also trended a little higher in 2018 than in 2017.
The F-350 Dominates
For 2018, the most stolen vehicles included — in the following order — the following models:
- 2007 Ford F-350
- 2006 Ford F-350
- 2005 Ford F-350
- 2004 Ford F-350
- 2003 Ford F-350
Are you seeing a pattern? It continues unbroken with F-350 and F-250 models until the Lexus GX-460 seizes ninth position. Ford continues its reign with the 2001 Ford F-250 at 10th place.
Why Is This Data Significant?
If one is in the giving mood, this data gives further bragging rights to Ford, and especially F-Series, enthusiasts. They’re wildly popular with legitimate and illegitimate truck owners alike, it seems. But the patterns in this data are noteworthy for other reasons, too.
In 2007, legislation Canada introduced legislation that required manufacturers to install anti-theft technology in their cars going forward. The F-Series models that dominate this list were all made before these immobilizers became mandatory.
The F-series’ top-selling qualities also contribute to its downfalls. Thieves love them because of their power and durability — the same reason why so many older models are still on the road today. Cars that are more than 10 years old are usually sold for parts, which can bring in a decent amount of money.
However, even though newer Fords come equipped with anti-theft technology, some criminals have figured how to get around that. With that in mind, here are a few ways you can keep your vehicle protected — F-Series or otherwise.
Preventing Car Theft
If you needed a reminder to always be vigilant against potential car thieves, this is surely it. No truck — not even a burly F-Series pickup — is off the radar when it comes to gutsy carjackers. Here are some simple reminders:
- Lock your doors whenever you’re not inside and close the sunroof if you have one.
- Find a safe location to park, such as a lot that provides obvious theft deterrents like security gates. If you have a garage at home, park inside at night and lock it.
- Don’t leave anything valuable in plain sight.
- Never walk away from your vehicle while it’s running.
Whether you own an F-Series or something else entirely, your car is an important part of your livelihood one way or another. If you don’t want to totally avoid a car that’s popular among thieves, at least know how to take measures to protect yourself from some of the worst-case scenarios.
