Ford F-150 with a Mustang intake manifold, a cat delete and a tune put this truck into the mid-12-second range.
Thanks to the introduction of the lightweight coupled with advancements in drivetrain technology, aluminum body, the current generation of the Ford F-150 is the quickest to date. In stock form, non-performance pickups can run the quarter mile as quickly as some high performance models from the past, but more importantly for those looking to go fast, the modern F-150 responds very well to simple upgrades.
The video above from the MORE-VOLTAGE YouTube channelis a fine example of how easily you can upgrade a new Ford F-150 to be just as quick as the modern muscle cars, with some common intake and exhaust upgrades putting this half-ton truck into the mid-12-second range in the quarter mile.
F-150 with Mustang Parts
The Ford F-150 in the video above is owned and driven by the Instagrammer 5.0_Lewy but sadly, that account is private so we cannot get any details there. Fortunately, the video includes all of the details that we really need.
As we can see, this is a late model Ford F-150 with the short cab and short bed, powered by the 5.0-liter V8, the 10-speed automatic transmission and the standard four-wheel-drive system. The owner has added a set of 17-inch Ford wheels wrapped in what appears to be standard Goodyear truck tires, a cold air intake and a ported intake manifold from a new Mustang GT. The owner also removed the catalytic convertor, which when coupled with the ported intake manifold, required an engine tune by Lund Racing.
It is hard to call a stock wheel-and-tire package from another truck a modification, but with those rollers, the intake manifold, the exhaust modifications and a tune, this F-150 is just as quick as a new Mustang GT.
Tearing Up the Track
In the video above, we watch as the tuned Ford F-150 inches into the staging beams at Houston Racewayin preparation to storm down the quarter mile. When the green lights drop, the four-wheel-drive launch gets the truck out of the hole in a hurry and from there, the tuned V8 does the rest of the work.
The full-sized pickup roars down the track, stopping the timers with a 12.581 at 110.81 miles per hour. At the time of the video being published, this was the quickest run by this F-150 and even if it has gone quicker since this run, this footage shows the incredible potential of the modern Ford truck in the world of drag racing.
"Before I was old enough to walk, my dad was taking me to various types of racing events, from local drag racing to the Daytona 500," says Patrick Rall, a lifetime automotive expert, diehard Dodge fan, and respected auto journalist for over 10 years. "He owned a repair shop and had a variety of performance cars when I was young, but by the time I was 16, he was ready to build me my first drag car – a 1983 Dodge Mirada that ran low 12s. I spent 10 years traveling around the country, racing with my dad by my side. While we live in different areas of the country, my dad still drag races at 80 years old in the car that he built when I was 16 while I race other vehicles, including my 2017 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and my 1972 Dodge Demon 340.
"Although I went to college for accounting, my time in my dad’s shop growing up allowed me the knowledge to spend time working as a mechanic before getting my accounting degree, at which point I worked in the office of a dealership group. While I was working in the accounting world, I continued racing and taking pictures of cars at the track. Over time, I began showing off those pictures online and that led to my writing.
"Ten years ago, I left the accounting world to become a full-time automotive writer and I am living proof that if you love what you do, you will never “work” a day in your life," adds Rall, who has clocked in time as an auto mechanic, longtime drag racer and now automotive journalist who contributes to nearly a dozen popular auto websites dedicated to fellow enthusiasts.
"I love covering the automotive industry and everything involved with the job. I was fortunate to turn my love of the automotive world into a hobby that led to an exciting career, with my past of working as a mechanic and as an accountant in the automotive world provides me with a unique perspective of the industry.
"My experience drag racing for more than 20 years coupled with a newfound interest in road racing over the past decade allows me to push performance cars to their limit, while my role as a horse stable manager gives me vast experience towing and hauling with all of the newest trucks on the market today.
