Ford Aims to ‘Redefine the Sound’ of Off-Road Performance

Everybody on planet earth loves the performance of Ford’s newest Raptor. But what they don’t love is the sound produced by it’s turbocharged, 3.5 liter Ecoboost V6. The raspy and very much un-V8 like sound emanating from those tailpipes just isn’t going to intimidate anyone. Which is a shame, because the Raptor is an otherwise game changing truck.

That isn’t to say that Ford didn’t spend a lot of time trying to make the Raptor exhaust sound great. Ford’s goal was to simply do the impossible – make a V6 sound like a V8. Or as close to it as scientifically possible. But making more power was always the first priority, as it should be. And this video from Ford demonstrates exactly how they did it.

In between some lucky factory driver hooning a new Raptor, we get to see some of what went into developing the new Raptor exhaust. Which, by the way, happens to be the Raptor’s first true dual exhaust setup. At least until it gets to the singular muffler, that is.

We also get to see cool stuff like glowing turbos and fancy animations showing things like “pulsating exhaust flow.” We’re not exactly engineers, but it sure does look cool. As does Ford’s performance shop, which seems like a giant candy store for fans of Ford trucks.

Love it or hate it, the sound of the new Raptor is what it is. And if that’s the only negative thing anybody has to say about Ford’s new off roader, we can live with that. Besides, you’ll hardly notice while you’re blasting down a sandy trail at high speed.
