steering wheel swaps

search function didnt match anything when i used the word swap. but then just using steering wheel only produced one page with nothing related to my question.........so here goes.

i wanted to try and find a leather wrapped steering wheel to put into my truck. feels better & would be an improvement over my worn steering wheel now. but whenever i go to the junkyards, the same steering wheels i find are either the same condition as mine. or the leather ones are either the wrong color or really messed up & worn.

but as i was walking around the local junkyard today, i noticed a steering wheel in an explorer that was in perfect shape. and it looked like the one in my lightning. so i started to wonder if they were interchangeable? does anyone know?

my current steering wheel with a cover on it

and this is what the lightning wheel looks like

it looks identical to the one i saw in the explorer. but i dont want to spend about $75 on something that either wont work, or will take a lot of fabrication to make work. can anyone give any input?

i guess what ill do is go back to the yard tomorrow (since im off) and yank the wheel. i looked at the connectors on an extra gray wheel i have. as long as they are the same, i may try it. but it will suck b/c if it doesnt, that's a $75 mistake.

There's not much to it,,the wire for the airbag and one for the cruise control. Cant imagine ford putting different plugs in.

Please don't forget to disconnect your negative battery terminal and wait a good 20 to 30 minutes before messing with the steering wheel. It's unlikely the airbag would deploy but it is better to be safe than sorry.

Let us know what you find out. I would like to swap my steering wheel too.

well, the explorer wheel would not work. harnesses are different. the one that clips into the clockspring appears like you cant even take it off...which in turn means the one that comes off on our trucks has nothing to plug into.

i ended up bringing my extra steering wheel into the yard to compare. if there was a way to get past the wiring issue, it will just bolt right up.

I still have a new, in the box leather wrap black steering wheel. It's supposed to fit 97-99 F150.... It's just sitting around collecting dust. I'll make it affordable. Send me a PM if you are interested..
