Sounds like your dealer charges $125 an hour and you got bent over on the labor too.

Was your entire sending unit bad? Or just he pump. If it was just the pump shouldn't they have replaced just that vs the entire thing? Also, did they replace your fuel tank straps under the recall?
If not, I'd be complaining because you'll have to take time out of you day to take it back if your getting it fixed under the recall.

They just said the pump was bad, and then replaced the whole esembly, what a difference it made though...fires like "bam"

I got mine done for 700 at Pep Boys. My fuel pump went out pretty much all of a sudden. I have had some work done at that shop before so I trusted them. I live in an apartment so didn't have a lot of options.

FWIW on a supercrew you can not simply pull the bed off, the cab is too long, and you must drop the tank out

No, even with the manpower or lift and new hardware for what gets broken, it's still much much slower. This being the better option is one of those myths that go around the internet like the plague. If your interests involve auto repair long enough, you'll eventually rid yourself of this misconception, in time.

Right, that's what I've been told before as-well and makes sense according to cost.
I asked around, this procedure usually runs $850 on average. Supposedly, the Ford Pumps or the replacements they use aren't cheap and should last the life of the vehicle. The original pumps have been much improved.
