2008 4.6 into a 1997 f150?

I found a 2008 4.6 that I would like to put into a 1997 f150 with a 4.6 and a 5spd manual trans. The 2008 motor is out of a f150 also. The guy that has the 2008 has the complete truck so I will be able to get the computer also. I would like to know if the swap is possible and if their would be any major problems.
Thanks Scott

You will have a hassle. The 97 does not have PATS wheras the 08 does. Also, I believe odometer information is stored inside the cluster. As far as engine, I believe they are the same, up to the throttle body. Your 97 is cable driven while the 08 has drive-by-wire.

Is there an intake manifold that would make the swap any easier?

That ain't all!
The motor is a cam Phasor type, uses a single pipe fuel system and other differences beside the lack of a Pats type dash in the 97.
The throttle is electronic control.
You need the PCM to run the motor and Pats to allow it.
Only way around the PATS is to have a custom program to inhibit the Pats if it is possible.
Be sure a flywheel will fit the crank properly.
People get into trouble trying to put a 4.6 swap against a 4r100, as it is.
You will need to coble up nearly everything from the 08 parts truck.
It may be beyond your ability to re-engineer.
Certainly too big a hassle for no guaranteed final result.
This isn't old times where a lot of parts and motors cross over and mix. Those days are gone.
Good luck.

There are no cam phasers in a 2008 4.6 out of a F150, it's a standard 2 valve engine.

Yes, that got by the grey matter.
Thanks.
He still has a lot of work to do to adapt.
It makes it much easier through.
Good luck.

You will need a PI intake as your 97 is non PI, check the oil pans to make sure they are the same, use your ignition system, wires, coil packs, wiring harness, PCM, etc. Make sure flex plates are the same, not sure about the front cover, just use everything from your old motor that you need to make it work. I'm sure others with more experience on these swaps will chime in.

Yeah. The one from your '97. You're pretty much going to be swapping accessories and whatnot from your '97 engine to the '08. Oil pan, intake, all that good stuff.

Don't bother with any '08 stuff.

One other thing, I'm not sure that late of a 2-valve 4.6L will even mate to a manual trans as is as it had been a while even back then that that particular engine was backed by a manual trans. Since the Mustang had long since moved on to the 3-valve 4.6L, you'll need to test fit that pilot bearing onto the crankshaft, too. Could be a surprise, but, hopefully not.

No, you can't use a non-PI 97 manifold on a PI engine.
