BIG oil leak
Hello Folks,
Just finished doing a complete rebuild on a 5.4L out of a 2002 F150 Lariat and started it for the first time today.
It runs great so far, except for the Exxon Valdez oil leak from between the engine and xmsn.
Searching the forum, I see mention of a slinger in addition to the seal. The gasket set had a one piece seal.
I've checked, and it is definitely engine oil.
Kind ticked that I've got to pull the xmsn.
Does anyone happen to have the OEM part numbers for the seal and slinger?
Thanks,
William

Looks like item 28 is the rear oil seal. Don't see a slinger.
Is it possible to install the seal backwards? The reason I ask is that I installed the 2-piece neoprene seal backwards in my 1965 Chevelle 327 V8 when I rebuilt it in 1968. The lip went towards the engine and I asked the mechanic at the Ft. Bliss craft shop which way it went and of course he told me the wrong way.

I've rebuilt several engines before, and I'm sure it is installed correctly. I plan to pull the xmsn tomorrow. If it is in backward, I will have a lot of crow to eat!
This is a project that the previous owner started after the engine froze and pushed out a couple of freeze plugs under the timing cover and sheared the water pump impeller.

I googled those part numbers and came up with the answer that the "slinger" is not needed and has a stupid name based on its position outside of any oil.

Also, I found F65E-6310-AB - the slinger - was superseded by F65Z-6310-A - which is the seal you listed. Look at the bottom of the page below.

Okay, After talking to two different Ford techs at two dealerships, I was told that the slinger goes in front of the seal with the metal face toward the rear of the engine. The slinger fits pretty tightly on the crankshaft and very loose in the cover.
Oh by the way, the big oil leak was not a bad seal, but failure/inadequate RTV bead at the oil pan to plate junction.
