Odd transmission activity

1997 f150 4.6 automatic 4x4
I sold the truck on Monday but later that day the buyer came back. The truck was whining when driving and would take forever to shift into 4th gear, once it did it bounced around (pretty violently).
I gave the guy his money back. The truck had sat for a couple of months but never had an issue like this before.
Is the transmission shot? Its wierd it came out of the blue like this. The only issue the truck previously had was the 4wd would not engage

I assume the first thing you did was check the trans fluid level?

It looked full and a normal red color. It almost looked like there was too much fluid in it

There would be no check engine light.

You'll need a scanner that can read transmission codes.

If the OD OFF light ever blinked, there will be a transmission code.

I've never seen it blink. I'm going to get it scanned tomorrow. Thanks for the help by the way.
