1ST Snow Drive in 4X4

Took my first ride in snow covered roads. A little slippery at first, switched to 4x4 (hi) nice and smooth. I like the extra weight of the truck, it feels glued to the ground. Braking was excellent no sliding, truck came to a solid stop. Switched back to 2 wheel drive everything seems normal.

According the the Farmer's Almanac I should be doing the same thing in about a month. I've already had to use 4X4(hi) during some of the hard rains we've had. The truck handled very well.

The snow was about 6 inches deep. I was up and on the road before the snowplows. Still early in the season, will start to come in feet very soon...

I took a drive with the family in my FX4 scab last weekend to the upper peninsula in Michigan and they had a good snowstorm while we were there. I got out on the roads the next morning before the plows along the coast line of Lake Superior and was really impressed with the handeling and braking in the 6 to 8 inches of snow and ice. The black truck looked awesome in the white snow too

Almost can't wait for the snow to start down here in lower Michigan.

That brings up some questions I've had for a while.

When do you decide to use 4wd in snow?

What is the max speed in 4wd?

Are there any techniques to use while in snow and 4wd?

Brewmaster,

Just engage 4 LO one time and then tap the gas. But first, make sure your head is planted firmly against the headrest! This should clear up any confusion. It did for me.

4 LO is usually reserved for crawling very slowly during off road situations. 4 HI, for normal speeds.

Apocalypse,

You can engage 4 HI while driving at speeds up to 50 or so. To engage 4 LO you must be stopped and in neutral. At least this is how it works in my '01.

Not that I ever doubted it, but it was nice to hear that the trucks handle snow so well. So far I've only ever driven in the snow in my front wheel drive car, so I'm really looking forward to getting one of the new trucks! I'm sure the difference will be like night and day.

Thanks also for the posts about 4 HI and 4 LO, I wasn't sure of the difference either.

Cheers.

Well maybe some day I can have a 4x4 as my 4x2 is a nightmare to drive in the rain it has done okay in the few snow storms we get in TN for the past 3 winters but it will be a couple more years before I can get a 4x4.
