gettin the oil filter off

man that sucker was on there tight!!!
its not in a bad spot.... just installed WAY too tight!

tried for 1.5 hours to no avail. socket type wrench just slipped and i broke my strap wrench. once the can started to deform i just took it to the dealer.

they charged me $9

$6 for the filter and
$3 to get the old one off (took the guy 20 minutes)

anybody else have this problem?

Mine was unusually tight...and others on here have said the same. I don't have that problem anymore, now that I change it myself (after getting the factory filter off). I use the socket type filter tool. Fits over the end. I had a much better tool that will NOT strip...it'll destroy the filter before anything else...but it was too small...won't fit this fat filter.

Yeah, mine was on extremely tight. Somebody or most likely something put the vulcan grip on that thing. I used the fluted socket type end-cap thingy also. I sure am glad I didn't even try the strap filter wrench.

Mine was a wee bit tight, but I attacked it from the top and gave it a conan-like tug and it broke free.

In a pinch - when all other means fail:

Hammer a screwdriver right through the middle of the oil filter and use it for leverage when twisting it off. It worked for me

Mine was on really tight also.... I had my son (stronger than me) up top, and I was under with a clamp type wrench. He used his hands and I used the wrench... it finally started to move... we turned about an eigth of an inch at a time, readjusting the wrench as we went so it wouldn't collapse the filter... it finally broke loose. I don't understand why it has to be installed so tight at the factory.

Snapon has a oil filter wrench that works for the impossible filters. The harder you turn the harder it grabs. To see it go to snapon.com and do a search for oil filter wrenches. To find it quick put the stock no. FWA62121 in the search block. I had a 2001 that a ford gorilla put the filter on. By the time I got it off there was no way you could tell what it was. I saw one of these wrenches on the truck and had to have it.

Let's see...if it's a Snap-On, it's probably $499.95.

I purchased one of these from the local Sears Hardware store:

Craftsman Universal Oil Filter Wrench, Auto-Adjustable
Lists on the Sears website for US$12.99.

Works fine and is compatible with different filter sizes.

Mine was tight also. I don't know why they put all those ft/lbs
on that small filter. Anyway, I got mine off by first taking the
the little small drip pan under the filter out of the way(this won't go back on). Then, I stuck a screwdriver through the filter.(this is messy). I let it drain for a while, then push the screwdriver all the way through to the other side and using the end as handles I finally got it to turn. Put on new filter hand tight only so I won't
have to go through this bulls#$@! again. No drips. Will be easy to get off next time. I always change my own oil. I don't trust those kids at the neighborhood oil change units(jiffy, etc.)making minimum wage tending to my $30,000 truck and dealers are too
expensive. JMO.

Crack it loose while engine is cold then take it for a run to warm up engine oil much easier that way

Zacky...I tried that and ended up with oil all over the engine compartment and undercarriage. I noticed that the oil pressure guage was reading -0-. Adding additional oil didn't seem to help. Do I have a problem?

Ford probably isn't putting the filter on any tighter than anyone else they are just probably putting the filter on without applying any oil to the rubber seal on the filter. Then that seal is fusing to the block with the heat of the engine causing it to be VERY difficult to remove.

What engine do you have and what weight oil are you running, cause if you thought 0w-20 was the latest and greatest for your truck you may want to re-think it. What is your climate like?
