Brake Shudder?

Hello,

I just bought my new 2004 screw xlt Saturday and only have a couple hundred miles on it so far. As of this date the 4 wheel discs are the smoothest brakes i've ever owned. My 97 F-150 Supercab's brakes lasted 90,000+ miles with never a shutter. You guys have me worried. Any info on this tsb would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Mike

2004 F-150 SCREW
Took my truck in at 12,000 for excessive brake dust and brake squeak. They said it was normal now at 21,000 pads are short and rotors are gouged bad. Dealer said that Ford only warranties brakes for 12,500 miles? Has anyone else heard of this?

Do you think they replaced them with the same junk that came on the truck? If so, you just bought yourself about 2500 miles before they're grooved again. Hopefully, they'll come out with better quality rotors or rotor/pad combination that doesn't warp and/or groove the rotors so badly. Unfortunately, it may take aftermarket parts to get back to "normal" rotor wear.

I took a look at my dad's '99 F-250 super duty with 56k miles and the rotors looked like new. My '04 F-150 with 2400 miles look like they have 120k miles on them! My '97 F-150 still looked good at 70k miles when I did the first brake job but it didn't have nearly as good of brake feel as the '04 does. Guess they got the better brakes by using softer rotors.

The problems with the rotors on the 2004 F150s are not necessarily universal. I've got 16,000 miles on my truck and the rotors are still in great shape.
Maybe they are getting rotors from several suppliers and the quality isn't consistent?

After man trips to different dealers, I have yet to get this problem resolved. My rotors have been grooved pretty bad (back more than the front).
I too am waiting for aftermarket pads and rotors because i just don't want to deal with having the same crap put on by the dealers.
It just pisses me off that after spending as much money as i did, you would think the dealers would jump at the slightest problem we have, just for customer satisfaction.........

just have to add a little something. I went to this site (http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/) back in may to issue a complaint about the rotors and i noticed that there is only 5 to date. Maybe we need to flood them with complaints like we are doing here.
who knows it might actually get the problem noticed.
since ford dealers are just listing it as normal wear i don't think the problem is even being addressed

You know I went to that link and couldn't find any info. Also, out of pure curiosity I compared the number of complaints on the chevy's to the fords of the saem year and there are twice as many. Food for thought

you may be reading me wrong, I'm not comparing any other makes against the ford.
I am a die-hard ford truck owner. It's the only truck that I will ever own. I would like the same commitment and loyalty that i give ford.... in return.
I want what I paid for.

I too had a braking problem at 10,500 miles the problem was gradually getting worse ,slight shaking when braking I took my truck back to Ford after reading this thread and told them of other complaints and most of all that I did not want resurfaced rotors just new ones and believe it or not they gave new ones to me.The new ones brake like it should again I just hope that I get more than 10,000 miles out of this set (The Front). I believe I read in the manual that the brakes are covered for 13,000 miles?

IMHO!!

Never get a Ceramic Pad for a truck. I have had nothing but bad probs with these on my past trucks with eating up rotors left and right.

I would wait until Powerslot releases there upcoming products before you go by some no name brand ceramics off of eBay.

Save yourself your hard earned money and just be patient.
