Brake Rotor Replacement?

Like many others, I'm suffering from warped brake rotors and a whole truck shudder when braking. Ford resurfaced, which means they warped again faster.

I intend to replace the rotors and pads myself (screw Ford).

Can anyone recommend a decent rotor/pad (low dust?) combo that won't break the bank? I prefer web shopping, so if I can get the parts at a site, please include the name.

Thanks in advance,

Jeff

I just chatted with a sales guy at one of the brake websites. He tells me that neither Brembo or Powerslot have yet released parts for our trucks.

What to do????

Go back to Ford and demand they replace my warped rotors with another set likely to warp again?

Just spoke to a rep at Powerslot.

Hopefully rotors and hawk pads for our trucks will be available by End of Year.

I had my rotors replaced @ 6k miles. While its under warranty, make Ford deal with it.

I had the same problem with my truck recently. I pulled the rotors off to resurface them myself since ford would not take care of it only to find out that the rotors have to be resurfaced with an on the car lathe. Here is the kicker, once I put the rotors back on and took it to a friends shop who was going to do it for me, the shake and brake was gone and along with it I also lost my vibration at 60mph. This was about 1000 miles ago and it is just now starting to come back.

Porterfield brake pads!!!

I never had the brake shimmy, but had TONS of brake dust, and the rotor seemed way too groved for 3k miles. Saw a post here about the Porterfield Kevlar carbon pads so I thought I would give it a try.

I took the truck in to my Ford dealer to have the rotors turned before I put the new pads on. The tech said that the rotors were warped. I never noticed any brake shimmy, but am sure it was only a matter of time.

I had the rotors turned, and the new pads installed. It has been about 1k miles now and guess what no Brake dust, grooves, or shimmy. Time will tell if the warped rotors return, but for now I'm a much happier camper

Oh, Pads were $90 including shipping, and another $125 for the dealer to turn the rotors. Interesting note: Dealer didn't have the rotors on the truck when they turned them???

I took my truck to the dealer today because my brakes were squealing. I never noticed any brake shudder but the dealer lubricated the caliper slides and turned the rotors down from 1.75 to 1.70. My rotors didn't have any grooves in them at all and I have 12k on the truck. The squeal is gone. What is the minimum rotor thickness before the rotors have to be replaced?

Also, when the tech took my truck for a road test, he noticed a sqeak coming from the rear spring pack. He lubed the spring pads per SSM 17777. The truck doesn't squeak when going over bumps anymore. I never really noticed it before but I could tell a difference. I always thought trucks were supposed to squeak a bit.

The stillen rotors are supposed to be out pretty soon. They have them listed on thier website but not available yet. I contacted them and the are hoping to have them out by the end of the year. They are a little pricey but I think they will be worth it.http://www.stillen.com/supertrucks_p...cat=182&dsbp=1

I tried to get ford to replace it but my Rotors were apparently burned and they said that is not covered. They asked if I wanted to pay them to put new ones on but I told them what for? So they can warp again? I flat out told them im going to deal with it until aftermarkets come out that will eliminate the issue.

I've decided to take the Lemon Law and shove it down Ford's throat on this subject...bad brakes seem like a safety hazard to me...

and to the Mods...damn, you have your hands full here...being a SuperModerator of another forum, I can well empathize with your situation...

at least you have a real life situation here, unlike some I get to deal with..LOL

Exclamation Brake Vibration

Hi,

This brake problem is current on my 04 Lariat Scab 4x2 and I just had an appointment with a Ford Engineer last Friday. TSB 04-15-1 includes installing improved rotors and steering gear, I expect mine in about 3 weeks.

I hope it works 'cause I really like this truck, but will not put up with this much longer.

Bob

I too am having a break shudder problem....whole vehicle shudders violently when breaking, this in addittion to the vibration from the floor pans has me ready to call in the lemon law. I'm taking mine to Dealer tomorrow and demanding replacement on my breaks.

Can some please give more info on TSB 04-15-1
