Troyer Performance -- Air Force One is NOW SHIPPING!

Originally posted by Superchips_Distributor {AKA: Mike Troyer of Troyer Performance}

Hi Everyone,

OK, OK the word is starting to leak out, and it's time now anyway, so here goes............

We have FINALIZED the testing of the Air Force One intake kit for the 2004 & up 5.4 3V F-150, and it PASSED WITH FLYING COLORS!! (It should have, heck, we've been doing the R&D on it since December of 2003!)

Now before everyone goes bonkers, a few details...

First, there are 2 people in this very thread who, along with a number of other trucks, assisted us with our final testing. I'll let THEM tell you what THEY think of the results on their trucks - which means yes you 2 guys, you can now officially talk about it, and you 2 know who you are! I won't mention any names, but their initials are RockPick & Marc Carpenter!!

Now as to power gains - at just 2000 rpm, there was another 20 HP at the rear wheels - at 3000 rpm, another 25 HP at the rear wheels - more power than ANY other intake kit has ever made on these F-150's. Now in terms of PEAK power gains at 5000 rpm, there the gains are smaller - about 10 HP or so, in round numbers, and this same pattern is seen with all intake kits for these vehicles - meaning the few that actually gain *any* power gain most power down low, and then a little bit up top. Which is *precisely* what these trucks need, and it's due to the fact that the restrictive factory intake works well only in 1 area (which has never happened before, by the way) - in a very narrow rpm band in the 4700-5000 rpm range - everywhere else it's a real dog and kills power - hence the 25 RWHP gains at just 3000 rpm from the Air Force One!!

How does it compare to the Airaid unit that up until now, we have been telling everyone was the ONLY kit worth having on these vehicles? Peak power gains are almost the same, with the AF1 coming out just a few HP ahead - then at 2000 rpm thru 3500 rpm, the AF1 comes out 5 HP better at the rear wheels - so they are both very close, both make very good power, with the AF1 squeaking out a slightly better power gain across the board - just as has traditionally been the case between those 2 manufacturers. So now there are TWO (2) intake kits that we can heartily recommend and that we are selling for 2004/2005 56.4 3V F-150 owners - Air Force One and Airaid - take your pick, either works great.

Now as to actual availability - we do NOT have any quantity of these kits yet - and nobody else does, either - contrary to a few rumors & catalog claims. We ordered darn near all the kits AF1 can produce right now once we signed off on this kit and accepted the results, so they are now gearing up for production. Currently we are estimating that we will be able to start shipping in quantity some time between May 1st & May 7th.

Now we had a grand total of just THREE (3) kits left over that were not used in our final testing, that are fully finished versions - and they are being shipped to the first 3 people who ordered the Air Force One kits months ago. Then everyone else will get theirs just as soon as we get ours, it's being handled STRICTLY on a first ordered, first shipped basis.

So that's the scoop - you can order your Air Force One intake kits for your 2004 or 2005 5.4 3V F-150 right now, and I advise doing so as soon as possible, so that your wait will be as short as possible, as it's strictly first come, first served, and they are in demand - as you can imagine.

Thanks to ALL of you who waited all this time - and for RockPick, one of F-150 Online's gracious Moderators - if there is any way you can maybe take this post and copy (repeat it) over into a new thread in this section, that would be fine with me to post in this section so that everyone can see it as a new thread - not just those who happen to drop by *this* thread. And if not, then don't give it a thought, I'll try to get that done myself hopefully some time tomorrow.

All the best from your friends at Troyer Performance,

As Mike indicated... I have been product testing for the AF1 now for about 1500 miles... With that in mind, let me make this disclaimer...

When Mike offered to allow me to do product testing for the AF1, he strictly told me that he wanted my opinion and, further, when it came time for this product to go live, he wanted me to speak my own opinion to the masses here at f150online.com. He, in no way, has influenced my decision and, in no way, has swayed me to say good, bad or ugly about this intake. The following is STRICTLY my opinion and is based SOLELY on the performance of this intake installed on my truck. I'm not associated with Troyer Performance other than being a customer. I have a very good name here at f150online.com and would, in no way, risk loosing my reputation for any vendor, product, or company. What I say is strictly brought to you by me. Period.

Let me tell you a bit about my truck.

First of all, I'm running the 87 octane custom tune from Troyer Performance for around 2000 miles and, additionally, have installed a Magnaflow SISO (16612) cat-back system. 3.73 LS rear end. 5.4 3v Triton. TEM5 computer code.

OBSERVATIONS: After running a few hundred miles with my 87 tune and my exhaust, I was VERY impressed with the overall feel of my truck. The throttle response was MUCH more impressive (no throttle lag), the pep and shifting was very firm, and the overall sluggishness that comes with the factory tune was eliminated. The Magnaflow provided a nice low rumble and completed a 'look' that I wanted to achieve on my truck. Further, I honestly felt a bit of additional 'off the line' pep after the addition of my exhaust (I've heard some say this isn't possible, for me, it happened. Period.). Needless to say, I was one VERY happy camper with my truck.

I had been waiting patiently to start to see some of the numbers that were coming out of some of the other intake systems but, secretly, wanted an AFO setup but, like many folks, I'm not good at waiting on products to hit the market.

Luckily, I was able to be one of the final product testers for the AFO and have been in very close contact with Mike during this test period. So, with that in mind, let's talk a bit more about the intake...

APPEARANCE: One word. AWESOME. The finish and overall feel of the product is impressive. Look at it! It doesn't get more attractive than that!

PERFORMANCE: Same word. AWESOME. Many will claim that they've never felt their intake under the hood and will further complain about noise and/or the 'hissing'. Performance wise, this thing can be felt using your 'butt dyno'. After installation, I IMMEDIATELY noticed that my truck was perkier, quicker, and, yet again, faster.

No noise what so ever. I had my wife stand on the gas once just to listen to it with the hood open and the hiss was present but, with the hood closed, non-existent. There's alot of air being pulled through there; this is a necessary evil but, like I said, not when the hood is closed and the Magnaflow is doing some talking.

I've never dyno'd my truck and probably never will as I'm not a performance guru (although I do like some perk on the pedal) but, I can definitely, without hesitation or doubt, tell you that this thing is worth it's weight in gold. Look at the numbers above!! 20 HP at 2000 RPM AT THE WHEELS not the flywheel! 25 rwhp at 3000!! Of COURSE you can feel it! The low end feels TOTALLY different.

INSTALLATION: Very simple. The factory intake is held on with, count em', ONE bolt. Pop that off, remove the air flow sensor and vac line, and presto, it's off. Installing the AFO took about 30 minutes going ULTRA slow to ensure that I got everything straight, aligned, and perfect. Zero problems. On my 05', I did not reset the PCM as the directions don't, directly, say to do this unless you throw a CEL. I, never once, threw a code to trigger the CEL. Never.

You may want to reset the PCM on the 04's. I'll let Marc explain.

OVERALL SUMMARY: It's a keeper and I'm VERY glad I didn't just jump on the AirRaid. While it's a VERY nice intake, the AFO edged it out in several different tests on several different dynos during recent R&D. While the edge was slight, I know I bought the right intake.

The packing was poor with the kit that I received but, after discussing this with Mike, he ensured me that this would need to be addressed and would be speaking with the folks at AF1 to remedy a potential situation. Plus, FedEx and UPS (and all of them) are hell on packages...

Troyer Performance, as usual, has shown me their professionalism and their dedication to the consumer. While I'm extremely pleased with their decision to allow me to assist them in product testing, I've gone on record LONG BEFORE now to express my opinion about their company. Look around on the boards here at f150online.com and you'll be hard pressed to find anyone who has had a poor experience with them. They JUMP THROUGH HOOPS to make sure you, the customer, is happy with your product, service, or other item that you've purchased through them. The service goes on LONG after your sale.

If not for an AF1, if not for a custom tune with the XCalibrator, if not for a SuperChips 1714, if not for a Magnaflow cat-back exhaust, or if not for a supercharger, you REALLY need to check this company out for whatever you may want to go with on your truck. There simply is no better company to deal with. No question.

I'm going to leave you with a few crummy pictures of the intake. My digital camera is horrid (and thus my new Canon A95 should be here tomorrow) but, you're going to have to live with these for now. (please note the very clean engine compartment... LOL!)

Feel free to email me or respond to this thread with questions. I'll monitor this one fairly close and will do my best to help out. I'm far from a 'motor head' but, I can try to do my best with anything that you can throw at me. Let me know if I can help but, be patient as work is kicking my butt here lately and I have little time to devote to the boards...

Gonna put the shades on now. I need 'em to even look at pics of Rock's ride. And to think that he has something else to shine up.
It looks great. Glad to hear that it performs well too.
A word about Troyer Performance. Integrity. If Mr. Troyer tells you it's worth putting on your vehicle, it is. I can't say that I've bought everything Mike has recommended from him, but if he's sold on it, it's worthwhile...Kevin

Troyer usually takes care of us around here. Especially on something that is new to the market. Give them a call Tomorrow and tell them you are a member here. I don't know if you will get it for less than what's advertised on their web site, but on something like the AF1 you will be hard pressed to find a better deal...Kevin
