Cool tail light mod (CHEAP)

OK as you all know our trucks have just one bulb in each tailight (other than the Backups). I was bored yesterday and took the tail light out of the drivers side and noticed there is a perfect spot below the backup for another bulb. Since I had a couple old taillights sitting around, I drilled a hole in the bottom section of the light and installed a 912 bulb and wired it into the taillight wires. Now when you have the lights on, your taillight has a bulb in the top and bottom section of the light.https://www.f150online.com/galleries...w.cfm?num=9744

Yeah, I took some last night, but wasn't sure how to post them. I can post them at FTW this evening though!

Is there just as much room in there as the standard tail lamp area?
I always thought it was a good place to have another light but never had time to work with it.
I was planning to do a LED tail lamp retrofit and was thinking of placing LEDs in there as well.

There's plenty of room in that housing. If you wanted to, you could put the same bulb in the lower section as you have in the top. Then you would have duplicate turn signals and brake lights.

I wonder if you could wire it so the top is used as the turn and brake light and the bottom is only the brake light. Then fit LEDs like on the Infiniti FX35/45 and those things will be crazy nice.

That sounds like a great and useful mod. You have to post pics here or at least a link when you get them on FTW.

Sounds like a great mod!! Can you post some pics of the inside to show how you attached it to the casing? Also it apears there is a whole in the bottom with a sticker to cover it. Is this a drain hole?

That would be an easy mod.
A dual filiment bulb has 1 wire for brake/turn and another for parking so you would just tap into the brake circuit so they only turn on when you brake or signal, and not when your parking lights are on. If you dont want it to turn on during signaling, just tap into the 3rd brake light circuit and use that as a signal for the lower tail lamp light.

Actually thats the hole I used to mount my light. However it's a tight fit against the body. A better way may be to go in through the back like the factory bulbs. I'll definately get some pics up as soon as I get home.

just tap into the 3rd brake light circuit
I would like them to be on when the parking lights and break light turn on...yet not be in use when the blinker is on. Is that a possibility?

Yeah, but I didn't think anyone made as powerful LEDs as you find in luxury cars?

Have you seen the Infiniti FX35/45 with the LED tailights? Those things light up like crazy and have the perfect linear pattern for our F150 tailights. Are there really aftermarket LED's that would fit into the OEM tailights and light up as bright as OEM LED taillights?

OEM led's use superflux LED.
They are much brighter than the standard 5mm leds and cost about 40-60 cents per diode. You can make your own LED board using these leds and they will be bright.

Looks Good!!! Reminds me of the RAM Tail Light though.

Again, is there a way to have it light up with parking lights and brake light but NOT blinkers?
