Was a thread of a do it yourself cold air intake. Had alot of bickering back and forth on the pros and cons so the author deleted it. Was/is a good mod in my opinon.

Now the same 300 miles a week at 17mpg and 93 octane costs $2.12 per gallon. That would be $37.41 per week in fuel.
You probably won't see a 2mpg increase with a 93 octane tune, but it would be worth the money if you did. Even with no increase in mileage you'd only pay an extra $4 per week.

Good point except you are leaving out the part about the "part" being designed to be quiet. Most of the stock intake is there to reduce noise. Take away the muffler and all you have left is a piece of pipe. So how much of the engineering of the intake is for noise reduction?
I don't design intakes, not a CFD guy, so I'm not really sure, but noise is only one design parameter (of many design parameters) of the intake system as its designed as a whole integrated system.
