I'm curious on this subject as well.
Also, does anyone know what they do on the 30K service?

It should be in your service manual that came with your truck.

According for Ford's website the following is performed at 30K service:

Change automatic transmission fluid
Change engine oil and replace oil filter (Up to 5 qts of motor oil)
Inspect and lubricate steering linkage, ball joints, suspension and, if equipped, half shafts drive shaft and u-joints
Inspect brake pads/shoes/rotors/drums, brake lines and hoses, and parking brake system
Inspect complete exhaust system and heat shields
Inspect engine cooling system and hoses
Inspect wheel ends for end play and noise
Perform multi-point inspection
Replace engine air filter
Replace fuel filter
Rotate tires for optimal tire life

Hmmm, worth $420.00?

I could see the oil, fuel filter, air filter and maybe the trans. fluid but the rest seems to be excessive labor for just 30K miles.

Tough call...

$420.00 sounds real steep for this list of maintenance

I checked the Ford Dealer's Service Website and found several local specials that should reduce the overall cost of the 30,000 mile maintenace.

I checked out my dealer Mac Haik Ford Inc. and here are the specials that I found in addition to other dealers in my area.

Change automatic transmission fluid-$89.95 automatic transmission service
Change engine oil and replace oil filter (Up to 5 qts of motor oil)-$19.95 oil and filter change
Inspect and lubricate steering linkage, ball joints, suspension and, if equipped, half shafts drive shaft and u-joints- Free, I can lube my own suspension.
Inspect brake pads/shoes/rotors/drums, brake lines and hoses, and parking brake system -Free ( check brake pads when rotating tires)
Inspect complete exhaust system and heat shields - Free, I can inspect my own exhaust system.
Inspect engine cooling system and hoses - Free cooling system inspection
Inspect wheel ends for end play and noise - Is this a wheel bearing check?
Perform multi-point inspection - Free MULTI-POINT INSPECTION
Replace engine air filter- $12.19+tax from Autozone and install for free (do it myself)
Replace fuel filter - $9.95+tax from Autozone and install for free (do it myself)
Rotate tires for optimal tire life - FREE tire rotation and brake inspection

Not all of the special prices are available from the same service center but I am sure that if you mention that you are going to schedule your truck at another service center then the service manager will be more than willing to negotiate the price. If not then drive down the road a few miles and take advantage of the other dealer's specials.

In addition, if you schedule your service on Saturday many service centers are offering 10%, $10, or $5 off Saturday service
Ford Service
$109.90 -$10.00= $99.90 before taxes
Autozone
$22.90 before taxes
Taxes 8.25% here in Texas

Total 30,000 mile maintenance
$122.80 + 10.10 taxes = $132.90

Its a whole lot of "inspecting" and very little work. Not to mention if they inspect something and find something wrong with it, its extra. 30k includes oil and filters everything is inspection and extra coins for work done.

From: Georgia on my mind...

Change the oil and filter, replace the fuel filter, service the transmission and call it done.
