"The Vibration and Such"

Just purchased a 2005 4x4 Scab and have 180 miles on it. I got the rear end clunk, a vibration at approx. 57 mph that makes the bed look like a paint shaker, and a steering wheel shimmy at approx. 65 mph (lucky me). After doing a search and finding many owners who have drive shafts replaced, etc. with no cure, I'm wondering if there is anybody out there who has had these problems that were rectified with just one visit and what was the cure. BTW, the truck was made 9/04. Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately, fixing vibrations in these trucks is part science and part witchcraft. There's quite a few different things to try depending on what's already been done, how bad your vibration is and when your truck was built. I don't know of any trucks personally that were fixed the first time around.

I gotta second what Quinton said. My "built in May '04" had the rear-end cha-cha originally. I brought it to the dealer twice for the problem; not sure what they tried but it was never solved.

Of course, now I've had the truck for 18 months and 12k miles and just recently got rid of the stock tires and wheels for some Pro Comps and - whattaya know - the paint shaker is gone!

Your truck is 14 months old and only has 180 miles?

I think its a mixture of a lot of variables, the stiff frame being a major issue.

The reason for the low mileage is because it was a left over...it was built 9/04 and not purchased then...Had Chevys for 25 years and wanted to try Ford...may have made a mistake...will let the dealer try to fix it but I'm not a happy camper as I hoped no problems with a 2005.

Don't fret, your dealer will work with you. There are numerous TSBs about the shimmy and they'll probably try all of them: turn the drive shaft, road force balance the tires, replace the tires, dampening kit in the rear (not sure of the specifics of that), etc. etc.

I never got overly worked up over the reared cha-cha on my '04 XLT because it only did it at around 57mph, acclerating, uphill. Odd....

I have the exact same 57 MPH shudder feeling... after seeing the disasters on here, I started Googling like a mad man... think it could be "torque converter shudder." It seems that lots of cars/trucks are famous for this problem. I haven't gotten around to trying transmission fluid additives (and quite frankly don't want to) but I have heard that they sometimes will get rid of torque converter shudder.

I have already had my torque converter replaced once on this truck and it still does it, although it is SLIGHTLY quieter. Does yours also shudder ever so slightly when coasting/decelerating from 45 MPH to 40 MPH? I can only feel it in the steering wheel when coasting there... but it does it consistently. If you give it a little extra gas at 57-60 and the torque converter unlocks, does yours get louder?

I am convinced that it has to be torque converter shudder.. but I don't know that there is a fix. I have had everything but the transmission replaced on this thing.

if its the feels like a out of balance drive shat vibe between 47 and 60.then its your transmission.i went to two dealers one put pinion shims in and it made it worse so i took them out myself.it took a half hour for me with jackstands. the invoice said it took them 3 hours and 414.00 charged to ford but that's another story.other dealer hooked up some type sensors called back and said they would have a new transmission off the assemply line for my truck in two days.they did and 3000 miles later still no problems.knock on wood.

Ditto! I had the bed shakes when I first brought her home. I took it in about a week later and the tires were to blame. After talking to the tech, it was mentioned that the set of rear tires on this truck had been swapped around to three different trucks on the lot over a 9 month period. When they tried to road force balance, the rear set were flat-spotted really bad. New tires = no bed shakes.

I had a slight steering wheel nibble from day one, then at 3000 miles put the 6" lift in. Continued with the nibble but at a lower speed (55 instead of 70), then after about 15k miles it faded to nothing. Now at 26k doing well no nibble.
