which tire and what size

I have been looking over post after post about tires. I have a stock 2004 FX4 with 275/65/18 BFG's and I am going to need new tires in the next year. I don't want to add spacers or liftkit or anything like that. Am I correct that I can go with possibly a 17 inch tire, say 285/70/17 as long as the (spacing?) is the same as the 18 which is 7.5 I believe. What would be the largest tire I could put on without rubbing? Reason I am asking is that there is such a limited selection in the 18" market right now. I want a tire that has good in the snow and rain and has good treadlife and good handling. I know I want it all. Most of my driving is on the highway or in town. I do have about 1/2 mile of gravel road (downhill then uphill each way) to the house. Or would I be better off getting some Goodyear or BFG take off's off of ebay. All opinions would be appreciated.

If you have 18" wheels you can not run a 17" tire unless you replace the rims that you currently have. As for tires some people have put 35" one on stock rims..I would not do it but it has been done. Anything over a 285 is pushing it, but that is my opinion. With a level kit you can go biger but the best rule i was taught is that as you go up you must also go out to be stable and support tire size.
