I've actually gotten quite good gas mileage in the right conditions... 80 degree day, wind at my back, downhill out of west texas. 2 partial tanks for the trip. I measure MPG from top-off to top-off.
First one I got 30.2MPG ... thought I miscalculated. It probably had a little fudge due to the way the truck was sitting on fill-up or something, so I doubt my MPG was actually that high.
Then my next top-off got 27MPG! I couldn't believe it since I couldn't have gotten a "favorable" fill like that 2 tanks in a row!
Haven't seen numbers anywhere near that since. That was with a brand new air filter, too.
I did get 18.2 MPG on my trip this last weekend.
That's with a 5.4L V8 and a cruising speed of about 76.

I've never let mine tank get down to empty, I usually fill up around the 1/4 mark. I usually get about 320 - 330 miles by that point. I just drove down from TN today and got 393 miles (19.1 mpg) before I filled up. That was 100%highway miles. Most of my driving is mixed though and I average around 16 mpg. That's a 2006 SCREW 5.4L with 30 gal tank.
