They should have plumbed one leg into the fender well, and leave the other exposed. Add a dryer duct diverter valve/flapper and voila, a Cold air intake for the summer, and a Warm air intake for those -0 degree winter days
Optional: in-cab remote (using an old manual choke cable - I still have one of those in my garage!)...

Wait a minute fellas. The concept is just fine. In terms of filtration, any air filter will benefit from twice the surface area to pull the same volume of air. The most efficient furnaces in a home have a very large filter. Physics tells me that the higher the surface area, the lower the flow rate which limits the drag through the media. The faster you move air through any filter media, the more drag you create (or resistance). That said, it is ugly.
