My single DIN install

I've had this Alpine in my car and it's become a waste having it in there, I drive the car daily about 15 minutes total. That's too short a time to put the faceplate on, attach the ipod and remove it all. So I went out and got a Metra kit. I test fitted the radio with the piece with the pocket and couldn't get to fit to my liking plus I don't care for the pocket. Already have one useless pocket in the dash which is useless, why have two? So the wheels started spinning and I tried the stacked DIN/double DIN piece. The radio fit much better, no gaps, but what to do with the open top slot? So I came up with an idea for that spot. Here's what I got so far. I put a block of wood in the empty spot from behind, then cut some plastic so it snaps in from the front. The plastic is off at the airbrush artist to get sprayed. That part I'll need to leave as a surprise for now...

The plastic, nothing exciting:

The radio with wood wedged in:

Once I get the finished plastic back I'll get it in and get some more pics. Hoping it turns out like I see it in my head.
