Found an 04 to buy, now I need advice.

After months of searching I finally found an 04 screw I like at what I think is a good price. Lariat, leather, moonroof, 2 tone paint, 4x4, 5.4. 65k 1 owner highway miles. The truck is about 300 miles away and I have only seen pics. Dealership was asking $20995, I offered $17500, they came back with $18800, We settled at $18300 out the door, contingent upon more pics and speaking to them over the phone.
What questions should I ask them about a 65k miles truck?
What problems should I expect to see with a 65k mile truck?
Thanks for your help. Carfax checks out ok.

I'm in the Cleveland area, about 300 miles from SW New York. Is the truck in N.E.Ohio area? If it is tell me what dealer and I can go take a look for you.

$18300 OTD is about $16,625 plus fees (figuring 10% for tax, license, title, etc..). Sounds a LITTLE too high to me, especially for having 65k miles on it. But hey what do I know?

My sister has an '06 F-150 S'cab 2WD that is worth about 20k on trade-in and its only got 8900 miles. Figure in the mileage, and I'd offer something like $15,500 plus fees, or walk. There's LOTS of used '04+ F-150's out there.

Don't do it. Too much mileage, too many issues, too much $$$$. Keep looking.

What issues? Where are you guys finding these Lariats for less money? Dealer auctions? Please let me know because I don't want to overspend. KBB, Edmunds, and NADA all put the truck around $18 to 19k. What am I missing here?

If your happy with the truck and happy with the deal, go for it. You're always going to find folks on this site saying. DON'T DO IT.... You can find better, cheaper, lower miles, etc.

If buying from a Ford dealer, have them run an OASIS report. This will allow you to see what dealer service, warranty repair and recalls may have been performed on the truck. Do this before signing if you opt to buy. If they play games on this, that's a good indicator of potential issues.

Personally, I wouldn't buy a vehicle without seeing and driving it. Photo's don't give you detail like you get when you see it in person. And remember there are hundreds of thousands of F150's, new body style, out there, so you might find another one closer and still get a good deal.

Hope this helps

I agree with SVT. It does sound like a fair deal but inspect the truck and get a history report.

Thanks for some ACTUAL advice. I'll ask for an Oasis report and see what happens. I guess no matter what you pay for a truck, there will always be some who got a better deal. Around here, none of the dealers have any used Supercrews, for some reason they command high prices. Even 02/03's bring good money.

I had an 04 and it was a great truck. Like others said, get a copy of the Oasis report from the dealer, and drive it like you will when you own it during the test ride. - be sure to cruise it at turnpike speeds. Also look for a vibration damperer hanging off the left rear leaf. My 05 had one and still had this annoying vibe in the gas pedal, strangest thing, but my 04 and now 06 is fine. Good luck with it, they are great trucks!

I have a buddy who has an '04 screw with 107,000+ for his sod business. I asked him just this weekend if he would have any heartburn about buying one with 60-90k miles on it. He said he sure would do it. The only thing he has had go sour is the driveshaft clunk (fixed by greasing the slipjoint) and the window buttons work sporadically (he blamed it on dirt, which I can see being in the sod business). Still runs great.

If you find one at a price you like, do it. Your post gives me hope since I'll be looking for a used 04 screw come August and thought they may be just out of my price range. Keep us up to date! Good luck!
