Alternator AND battery dead at the same time?

Actually, you'll get 14V. The alternator will be outputting max. which is regulated usually to 14V +-1V. A dying battery can easily kill an alternator which as you said will be carrying most of the load. The alternator will run hotter and hotter and sooner or later the diodes will fail. But the question was dead alt. and dead battery. Yes, it's fairly common. I see a lot of guys replace the alternator with a weak battery only to kill the new alt.
