That's not necessarily true. If the diameter of the tire is the same, the tire itself may offset the weight of the wheel.

Here's an example:

Toyo 265/60-18's: 45 lbs
Toyo 275/55-20's: 41 lbs
Toyo 255/70*17's: 42 lbs

If the rim is 5-7 lbs heavier between an 18"/17" and 20" size (which in most cases is the reverse for many aftermarket cast aluminum wheels as the stock rims are heavier), the difference in sprung mass is nearly the same, especially if the original wheel is steel.

I have had my 4.56's installed for over a month now and am on my 2nd tank of gas (1/2 through 2nd tank). After the 1st tank my mileage only increased by .1 mpg, not quite what I was expecting. The power increase is great though and just the other day (after I passed the initial 500 mile mark on the gears) I punched it and actually spun the tires. The road was slightly wet from a recent rain though so that probably helped some, but I hadn't felt my truck respond like that since, well ever. I'll report what my mileage is after the 2nd tank, but all my driving is stop-n-go so I feel I'm not seeing what I would be seeing if I were still doing mostly mixed driving.

Did you take it to the dealer just to make sure? You just want to make sure to prevent an expensive repair down the road.

Have you ever heard a slight whine going from 1st to 2nd gear? It's similiar to that only lasting the whole time at higher speeds.

I would take it back to them no questions asked, they F_ed something up or didnt install them correctly, I asked a buddy about the whining and he said that is not normal. He is the main gear guy at his shop so I would think he knows what it should sound like.

let us know what they say.

HHMM...I'm probably getting close to 2k on them. Hopefully it will die down.

I did take it back to the shop and drove the manager around on the street. It was embarrassing there because there was so much traffic around causing noise you really couldn't hear anything but my exhaust. I also didn't get over 55. You hear it most at speeds around 75-85.

Well, I have had my new Precision 4.10 gears installed for 1500 miles now and so far the fuel economy doesn't seem to be decreasing, it seems to have increased from what I was getting before.

When I originally bought the truck it had the OEM 18's on it but then I went and bought the 20's and that killed the power and a little in fuel as well. Not only that but with the stock 3.55's, custom 2.5" exhaust/Mag muff, k&N drop in, and Edge on level 3 the truck couldn't do anything on the highway without unlocking the torque converter constantly. With the new gears and same mods the truck can accelerate without having to do so.

I monitored my last 5 tanks of gas before I got the gears and I have kept track of two tanks since the gears. I've pretty much done similiar acceleration between all tanks around 25-30% according to Edge APP monitor.

Before gears were as follows: Miles / gallons put in I do a combo of city/highway driving.

351/24.2 = 14.5
321/23.5 = 13.65
355/23.4 = 15.17
365/24.5 = 14.89
374/27.9 = 13.4 yuck

After gears first tank
395/25.2 = 15.67

And then I just drove up to Atlanta on Wed. from Orlando - a 480 mile trip.

479/27.7 = 17.29 - pretty damn good I think. I had it on cruise whenever I could. Obviously I got slowed down with construction and the traffic but whenever I could I had it on cruise at 80-82. RPM's while at 80 are at 2415 ish

Anyhow, I just wanted to say getting gears doesn't necessarily look like a fuel economy loss depending on what you go with. I'm going to keep monitoring it to see if it stays this way. In hind sight I would have gone 4.56. While the 4.10's are nice they didn't quite give me the performance jump in acceleration I was hoping for. The only thing I don't like about the gears is they make a slight wine the majority of time you're driving. It gets kind of loud between 40-50 but dies down again but while you're crusing at 80 you can certainly hear it. Maybe I'll feel diffrently when I get my Troyer tuned Xcal3 and AF1 3.5" installed next week. We'll see.

Here's my truck incase you're wondering if it's lifted, etc. Nope Truck is '06.

Jeremy....what size tires you running? Was your factory 275/65/18?

Factory was 265/60/18. Now I have 275/55/20.

For those with higher rolling masses, I can understand why your mileage suffers, because you need to burn more gas getting that weight up to speed.

I was considering going to 20's, but it sounds like 18's is the cut-off.

Makes going with a Gear Vendors more realistic.
Last time I checked GearVendors was having prolems making their system work with the drive by wire throttle control in the F150's. Not sure if they will work in our trucks.
