the drive-shaft is only a slip-yoke on this model, so it just fell out the rear of the transmission when the axle moved backwards.
sorry for the loss, but I'm thinking they won't total it out. the axle is easily fixed and most of the damage looks cosmetic. hopefully I'm wrong and a shiny new 08/09 is in the future

I was at the stealership today for an oil change/rotation and they had an 05 reg cab 8' bed super duty they were rebuilding from the ground up. The driver hit a patch of ice on the freeway and slid into a concrete barrier, bent the frame horn on the pass side, pushed the right fender back into the door, which was pushed into the back wall of the cab. On impact, the pallet full of sand bags in the bed broke loose and slid into the back wall of the cab and pushing it in about 6 inches and shattering the back window. Also, the bed was mangled beyond repair. The insurance company is paying to repair the truck, including the new frame. The tech I talked to said that ford will not allow them to straighten the frame, they have to be replaced. He also said the estimated repair bill is more than 20 grand.
