Bouncing Box

Before your minds wander off into the gutter, I'm talking about the 5'5" box on my '08 SuperCrew. Looks like what I'm seeing in my rearview mirror is a problem experienced by a number of owners of the latest model. At any speed, going over some bumps on pavement, more visible on rough roads, the back corners of the box bounce up and down like something isn't bolted down.
No noise, just the wobbly bouncing box. I had Ford check it, they had never heard of the problem, sales, body shop, service, they all agreed that, hey that box sure bounces, but no fix. Took an identical new truck off the sales lot and drove it around their gravel back lot, same bouncing box.
So, any fix, or any long term problems?

Pretty normal.

Check out this video. F150 is the better of the three.

Got that video from Ford several years ago and got another one when I just purchased my '08. The Toyota is just scarey. I had a '00 SuperCab and never experienced the box bounce. It sure was an automatic WTF when I first drove my new one. It's noticeable at any speed, even just around the side streets going slow, as soon as you hit a couple of bumps, road cracks, manhole cover, crosswalks, the "rear corner flutter" starts. With that much movement and flexing I'm guessing something will eventually split and crack some years down the road.

I GOTTA find another truck like mine and follow it down the road to see how bad it looks from the outside. Went out with the dogs earlier and a couple of times I thought it looked like the box was shakin' right off, ureal!!

It's just because the frame is like 8x more rigid than the past generation F150... All the force from the bumps has to go somewhere. It's normal.

I'm hearing that it is normal, but what a real weird normal. Looks scary from the inside. Just got to take notice of other trucks to see what they look like. Strange how the Ford shop had never heard of this before, ya, whatever.

All truck beds bounce. There's no weight in an empty bed to push back on the leaf springs and shocks.

Most trucks just have a bit of bed vibration. You'll get sea sick following behind a Tundra. I have never seen another truck bed flex 4-6 inches on paved roads before. My neighbor's Tundra is almost impossible to drive on a wash-board dirt roads. The faster I go in my F-150, the more smooth the ride is. He can't go above 25 MPH because the Tundra's bed hits the cab!

I guess with all the people, crowded roads, driving on the other side in Japan, Toyota never thought it would be an issue in the wide opens spaces of the west. HA! I've driven many different trucks over the last 40 years, never seen a new truck bed bounce like they do now, unless it was an old beater that was rusted through and some of the bolts were missing!!

That havent heard of it b/c it's not a problem and to add, if its shaking even on smooth pavement then get your tires balanced. my truck bed bounced like crazy at certain speeds and it was the tires.

the bed bouncing is normal...although when we say "bed bouncing" it's actually the cab you see bouncing. The bed is directly mounted to the frame, where the cab is on isolators.

I've had my truck in some really bad twisty situations and never had any sort of contact. I think you're 100% safe from anything like what the Yota does

It is a weird one though! I find on mine the driver side of the box bounces/ wiggles more.

the road out to my duck blinds has a ton of big potholes, and my bed bounces around like crazy too.

I had a buddy follow me down that road once video taping my truck, and when i watched it, i was amazed at how much the shocks/suspension were actually absorbing. from behind, the truck actually looked really GOOD, the suspension acting properly, and proportionally little box bounce for the size of potholes i was going over. Its cool to see how much those outboard mounted shocks really reduce the bed bounce.

Well it must be a 5.5 bed thing as both my 07 and 08 SCAB 6.5's dont move. Even when they get bounced around on some of the crappy back roads in the mountains.
