Transmission Issues

I had to get my truck towed to the dealership today because the transmission went out. When i started it up this morning there was a noise similar to the noise the power steering makes at full lock coming from under the cab but it only happended till about 50 mph then it either stopped or got drowned out by my exhaust. i couldnt tell which. I drove about 15 miles with it making this noise then i had to drive around a neighborhood stopping at different houses to check them. This consisted of a lot of stopping and going and reversing. Later on my truck started shuttering when it was shifting out of first and reving really high compared to the speed i was going. After i heard the noise the truck was making i was gonna take it to the dealership after i was done with the houses but when i left to head up the the trans stopped working about 5 miles down the road and the truck wouldnt move. I have had transmission issues once before where the truck would redline but only go about 40 tops. I had it taken in and they replaced the gears because they were all chewed up. And it definitely sucks watching your truck get towed off on a flatbed.

Sounds like the same problem I had with my '03 Escape.... I'd be driving along then the O/D light would start blinking... 2 miles down the road, I would need AAA. I had the tranny blow out on my 4 times, every 15k like clockwork!

The last time it blew out on me, I was close to home, and I got my buddy's tractor and I towed the thing home myself and called a flatbed the next day. I was lucky my friend was with me or else I would've used the front loader to kill that suv and he made me actually think before I did that though...

What are somemore specs on your truck?

Mine blew at 80,000. I lost 3rd and 4th because the tranny pump went out.

Canes... they couldn't figure out why mine blew up 4 times... I mean they knew what caused the problem, but they didn't know why it was causing me this havoc. I even had a tizzy with Ford about this...

That's why I hung the towel on Ford's automatics... at least for a little while. For some reason, I'm still don't feel safe with them, especially when I read stuff like this.

But you've got to figure how many auto trannys Ford makes, compared to how many I hear about.. but then you've got to figure in the ones that I don't hear about. So it's sometimes frustrating to find the right facts.

I wish Ford and other automakers would make a percentile range -- especially on trucks -- on what's the major flaw of the vehicle. Then again, that would stir the normal person away. Be then again, everyone has the right to know.

From: Georgia on my mind...

There's a lot of parts in an automatic transmission that require critical timing on when this is applied or that is released for the transmission to live a long, happy life.

Stuff happens.

My dad has over 200K miles on an E4OD, all I've done is service it semi-regularly. It's kinda depressing, but with what repairs I've done on my truck in ~78K miles (as opposed to what I've done on my dad's truck in over 200K), I'm expecting my 4R75 to blow up well before 200K. They just don't build 'em like they used to.

Do you know much about line pressures in an automatic transmission? I had 3 cases where the pump shaft would just shatter under high line pressure... what would cause that to happen? This was with a CD4E.

mine had a main bearing go, then first gear shredded, and just went on down the line, I guess it just happens, doesnt matter what you do.
