Key Help

Hey Guys - not real sure where I should post this - but I have a question....
My Fiance is buying an 06 mountaineer from a small independent dealer - the truck only comes with 1 key - the dealer said that they would not be able to get us a new one - so we are on our own to get it..... I have called around and the best I can find is 30 for the key and 50-60 to program it - I have been told by some folks that if I get a key then I can program it myself - is this true? Or do any of ya'll have any other ideas for me? Please let me know -
Thanks
Brett

yes you can get a key off ebay and program it yourself. i tried to do this and the ford dealers here wouldn't cut the key because i didn't buy it from then, they wouldn't even cut a normal key for me (i wanted one to keep in the cab to unlock the tailgate) your best bet is to have a locksmith cut you a key and then program it yourself, it's very simple. alot of place i went to, the ford key won't fit in their machine.

You can program your own key real easy. I bought a spare for my truck and followed the procedure in the owners manual and had it programmed in minutes. Make sure you buy a factory key to avoid any issues too.

I called the dealer and they asked me for my VIN. The key was cut and ready to be programmed when I went to pick it up after work.

I haven't check the manual for that particular model, but for most models you can only program a key if you have 2 keys that are allready programmed... If you have only one a Ford Dealer will have to program it....

If I remember correctly it's a rather expensive task, somewhere around 100 dollars to program a key if you don't have both orginals.... It possible a larger Lock Smith might have the computer interface to do this task but I would call around first and find out what they would charge and if they can do it.

Nope, your right. I remember I had to have both keys when I did my spare. His only option my be to have the dealership program the second key for him.
