Wierd groaning sound in reverse????

Whenever I shift into reverse and start to let off the brake a wierd groaning sound comes from the front of the truck. After a few feet of backing up it will stop. Anyone else had this problem? Thanks in advance

I cant help you out. It would help others that read your post if you can tell everyone what year truck, engine, auto or maual tranny, mileage. That way somone can help you out.

Do you use your E-Brake and are you sure the noise is comming from the front?

E-brake not releasing all the way?

After you drive a while any of your wheels abnormally hot? I had a caliper die on my 05 I had and heard creaks and growns when it initially started going bad.

Son of a bi##h!!!......I have the SAME thing going on right now! Thought I was the only one.

I have an 08' fx4 4x4 automatic with 373 axel and 20,000 miles. I never use the e-brake so that not it. But just as the op said, as I start to roll back in reverse, it a "groaning" sound. Kinda sounds like the brakes draggin, but tapping the brakes dosent change the noise at all. I cant tell where it is coming from exactly, but its under the truck. It does it when its hot or cold, sunny or rainy.....etc. Dont know if its the rear end, tranny, or something else. Its hard to explain it, but its definatly getting on my nerves. I would rather figure out what it is before taking it to the dealer and having a bunch of dip-****s look at it.

sometimes the brakes will groan a little... especially in reverse, especially first thing in the morning when your brakes might be a little damp after sitting overnight.

Have you ever noticed it once the brakes are hot? Or only first thing? If its only first thing, I wouldn't worry about it.

Daybreak...you nailed it perfectly i couldnt describe it better. At first i thought it might have been because of the rain but it did it again today and it was sunny out. I can let off the brake all the way and it will groan for about 10-15 ft and then it will stop. Its deff comin from the front of the truck. Its just annoying now. I can only get it to happen in one out of 5 times i back up. I really dont feel like taking it to the dealership either and have some tech start digging around. You think its a tie rod end just shifting a little when the truck starts to back up?

That is normal. It is the brake's friction material vibrating against the rotor. I think all Ford vehicles I've ever driven always had that noise.

The only time my truck does it, is when I'm on hills... but that's because it is standard shift.

I had a similar problem with my 04 fx4. whenever i shifted into reverse i could only back up a lil bit then it felt like i hit a wall and wouldn't go anywhere i had to go half throttle to back up a little bit. at first i thought my brakes were locked up but they were fine. so i called a mechanic friend and he suggested the e-brake pads were broken. he was right after i took my brakes and rotor off the e-brake pad fell right off in two pieces. bought the parts and replaced both rear pads. not sure this is your problem but it might be something to check out
