Removing Oil Filter

I use the motorcraft 820S oil filter. I have such a tough time getting the oil filter off with the normal wrenchs. Its not thats its too tight but more that I cant get the wrench in the right position and my hands dont fit up there very well. What are yall using?????

Thanks

I use my hands, never tighten the living hell out of it, rub some of the new oil around the rubber ring on the filter, and hand tighten. If its a challenge, stab it with a couple screw drivers and use them as handles to twist it off ( thats how I did my first oil change since the dealer tightened it so hard and i'm without a oil filter wrench )

A "strap wrench" attached to a 1/2 ratchet if need be.

You should be able to remove them by hand. Sounds like you're twisting them on too tight. Spin it on, when the rubber seal makes contact with the base, no more than a half turn! So many folks think these filters have to be tightened beyond belief or they will leak. Not true at all.

Ratchet, 10" extension, and the filter wrench that looks like the bottom of a cup, wit indentations that fit exactly the FL-820S bottom. Real easy.

Looks similar to this.

Yep. If you have trouble with a wrench it is too tight. Hand tighten ONLY.

I heard a horror story one time about a brand new Chevy truck. It was taken into a dealer for its first oil change. The tech broke a filter wrench on it. Stabbed it with a screw driver and broke it as well. They finally got it off but I would have been totally pissed if I owned that truck.

Hand tight means as snug as you can with your bare hand with some oil around the O ring. Nothing more.

He already stated that it is NOT because it is too tight but that he can not get to it very well.

I have an 08 with the 5.4L. I remove the air intake and and change the oil filter from the top with a strap wrench. Don't need 10' of extentions or anything like that. Oil filter is very easy to get and it is very clean. Didn't spill a drop of oil when I did mine.

Why would you you do all the work of removing the intake when a 10" (that is inch) extension gets right onto the filter. Takes me all of 30 seconds to have it off. And the only reason I use the extension is so I have more room to move the wrench handle. You can reach it with just the ratchet and the oil filter tool.

OK, let me be more clear. I removed one 10mm bolt, pulled the air intake out of the big black box that says 5.4L Triton on it, and swung it out of the way. Takes me all of 15 seconds. I have pictures. I can post them if this sounds too complicated.

And I remove nothing, get to it from underneath, from in front of the axle. Have to be underneath at least once anyhow to drain the oil. From in front of the axle, you can reach and get tools onto the filter very easily. And also easily clean off the plastic spillway that diverts the oil around the axle.

Well you might not remove anything, but I don't have to clean off the little plastic spill way because I don't spill oil on it.

Guarantee you do as when you are unscrewing it it starts to drip, even before it is completely unscrewed.

I use a cap wrench that fits the top ridges of the FL820S filter and have never had any problem getting filter off.

Question Wtf?

Geez guys. 6 of one, half dozen of the other. Who gives a rat's azz?

Personally, I think I might give 18's method a try since I don't have a filter cap wrench that I can use with a ratchet; and there wasn't anyway in Hell I could use my useless azz strap wrenches. Thanks again Bob V!

With the '99 & '05 I get oil everywhere when I do it from underneath, although I can spin on a new FULL filter without spilling a drop on either truck.

Cap wrench works perfect. Just needs to pop it loose and then its easily removed by hand. Oil drains out the hole in the crossmember and very little to no oil mess at all. Takes 2 minutes to pop it off and easily gets the oil changed start to finish in less than 30 minutes total, if that.
