It would be helpful if you told us where this "perfect spot" is. That way someone could offer up a nearby power wire.

I'm about to hard wire my garmin this week sometime. I am making a mount up to sit in the dash tray. I'm running the hard wire down and plan on hooking into one of the power currents there. I should have enough to choose from.

Here's mine. You can see the small hole I drilled and hard wired it to the radio power source.

You can get to the wiring by pulling off the front dash around the radio

I use to have my GPS way up on the left side of the windshield so it was sort of hidden by the sun shading. I installed a 3 way power splitter under my dash and tapped into my existing outlet wiring. Then I routed the GPS cable through the dash to the splitter. I did this by pulling off the door vent panel where the dash ducts air to the door and pulled the cable through there. No need to ruin the cable to hardwire plus I gain extra outlets.

Did this in my 98 and installed a 3 dollar cigarette lighter plug behind the dash and tapped into the power source for my radio. I mounted the unit in the upper left corner of the windsheild and ran the wire across the dash below the gauges then up behind the a pillar and out by the unit.
