Oil Pressure

Driving down freeway, engine (lifters) started clattering. Oil pressure dropped to nothing, loss of power. Could this be oil pump failure, oil filter failure or something else? Checked fluid levels, approxiamtely 3/4 qt. low. Anyone have any ideas?

What brand of filter do you use? Have you tried to start it since this happened? It could be several different things. If you start it and there is no oil pressure and it clatters, shut it off immediately. If it has oil pressure and doesn't clatter, still shut it off. That would mean it probably has something bring sucked up against the oil pick-up screen. It will often relax and fall away enough for it to get oil again when it sits for a little while. The pan would still need to be pulled and the pick-up cleaned. No pressure, it could very well be a bad pump.
