4 wheele drive not engaging

I have an 06 f-150 fx4, sometimes (usually the worst possible time) the 4 wheel drive will not engage and the 4x4 indicator light on the dash will not come on. If I tap on the solenoid it will engage. Does this mean my solenoid is going bad? needs to be cleaned? something else wrong?

the two easy to fix problems are the motor on the t case getting stuck. wack it with a hammer and see if it engages then. and the solenoid. replace it if you suspect its bad. if its not that you gotta get into checking the check valves and vacuum wires.

If your tapping the solenoid with success, swap it. Try unplugging and plugging the wire connection first. Could be oxydized, or moisture causing bad contact.

If you have the old style solenoid I would replace it. Just replaced mine and all is good.
