Towing question

So I am thinking of surprising my GF after may long week and showing up 1100km away where her parents are. Plan was to actually fly her out but that isnt going to work so she is driving (I would drive her out but I work 70hrs in 5 days so its a no go). I told her the other day that my plan was to drive her back after her trip if she flew. But I also said I was still going to drive her back.

Anyway I have a 2006 F150 4x4 supercab xtr 5.4L 18's with good tires and tow package. She has a 2008 chevy colbalt 2 door. I am debating renting a uhaul car dolly or an actual uhaul car/truck trailer and hauling it back the 1100km trip. I know my truck will tow it and what not. But having only towed boats, sleds, quads etc... will it tow it without me having to do anything (i need brakes so they'd be done before I left and getting my 7 prong hooked up for trailer brakes). I plan to pretty well show up, surprise her, spend a few days out there with her then tow her car back.

Anyone tow something like this across hilly terrain and prairies? I wanna get at least 10 mpg as gas is close to 5 bucks a gallon or more.

You would need a brake controller if you don't have one yet.... and the harness to attach it to the trucks wiring. I recommend the Tekonsha prodigy. Had good luck with these and they work great. And you can actually buy the Ford harness from them that is already made up on both ends. Easy plug and play.

U-haul trailers have surge brakes and don't need a brake controller. They also have a special wiring harness, so you'll have to buy an adapter to go from the 7-way to their bullet connectors.

Interesting. Never used one of their trailers.

Forget what I said then if your going to use one of theirs.

Otherwise.... my recommendation still stands if you ever need a brake controller.

Yup, they use surge brakes. I think the last car hauler I rented from them had the usual 4-pin connector, but I can't remember for sure.

Yep, just get a car dolly from u-haul. I used one for my ranger for an 800 mile trip and had no problems. Towed pretty good. Just make sure you tow the cobalt backwards if you use a dolly.

Rent a trailer, not a dolly. You can't back a rig up with a dolly. Much safer and easier tow.

10 mpg is a "maybe".
