smell brake /HOT ROTOR!!!

I was driving , on way home and sudden i smell brake and its little smoke..

I checked...its front left is dragging!! VERY hot to touch rims and ROTOR!!

I let it cool down and removed brake caliper etc and rotor look good..
after I removed caliper brake and turns the rotor wheel.. it look good...
put caliper on..start up motor and applied brake few times then re-check the wheel, but I m having hard time to rotate the wheel by hand..

somethinge definitely wrong with brake caliper.

I believe that caliper is shot and need to replace but i want to see what else is option to look for ??

Ill go pep boy for part or do you have reocmmend brand ?

thanks!
Jake

My rear caliper did this, but it was on and off. Finally replaced it, no issues ever since

Can't recommend a brand as mine was under warranty

with the caliper on open the bleeder and if it doesnt replace the caliper is sticking. youll want to replace both sides at the same time and go with a reman part for price.

and you will have to bleed the system which does mean you need a friend to help out but its not something that takes very long. you cant drive it safely without bleeding it

Hopefully that solves it. Keep an eye on it. I had a similar problem but it was the piston, it was cracked and wasn’t releasing all the way so same symptoms, heat build up and smoking tire. It was one of those things were it would happen one day and then ride fine for 2-3 days. Took me a while to figure out what was going on.

I've had 2 Chrysler products at one time...a 99 ram 1500 4x4 and a 03 ram 1500 4x4...they were good trucks for me...they never missed a beat....it's just weird that with my f150 I had 2 calipers fail within 6 months of each other...I'm not saying I'm going to run out and buy another dodge....just found it strange to have 2 go bad like that...

Glad you got it fixed but look out for brake pull and issues with the other side. You really should do the same thing to both sides since now you might lock up the other side without warning also

With reman caliper or replacement they have new pistons and seals etc. IMO if you have a caliper lock up or get sticky I'd replace it asap no questions

x2, wish I knew that when I replaced a front left seized caliper last year, just before I traded in my '04 the front right seized. Oh well, new owners problem now.

rules are made for the people that need them. if you are observent enough to catch you caliper dragging then you have earned the right to wait till the next one fails to change it. It might be a day and it might be 5 years from now. There is nothing wrong with waiting, Mind you.... lol Id change both.
