Do I really need a tune up?

I've got 60k miles on my '06 Lariat Scab. What do you recommend needs to be done at this interval, if anything?

My dealer, who has been very good to me btw (lots of rewards, free stuff, great customer service, etc.), is recommending a 60k mile service. Not sure exactly what it entails, but I think it's fuel filter, plugs, lots of "checks", proly an oil change thrown in there, etc. They want like $400 for everything they want to do.

I love this truck and plan to keep it until it's dead. Is it worth it to go ahead with the tuneup?

Depends on what has been done before and how you use the truck

Fuel Filter: Change aboit every 20,000
Plugs: Change at about 75,000
Clean MAF: About every 30,000
Clean Throttle Body at about 75,000
Coolant: Change at about 100,000 or 5 years
Tranny flush: About every 60,000
Rear lube change: If tow a lot, every 60,000 if not change at 100,000

Of course, the oil needs to be changed at regular intervals. I do mine at 4,000 to 5,000. I doubt they are including plugs for $400 with other items, but if they are, I would go ahead and jump on that.

I agree, if it includes a spark plug change, then it is worth it. Normally the dealers charge $600+ for a spark plug change because of the problem with them breaking.

Ford is recommending spark plugs at 60k now with the 5.4 3v with the original heads.

Just to add, I do that MAF about every oil change. Get those plugs out of there buddy And get the tranny fluid changed, even a drop of the pan and filter is beneficial.

When did that change? Last time I checked the online schedule it was still at 100K. Not that it's a surprising change though.

OP- for me, 60K was oil and filter, fuel filter, tranny drain and refill, and inspect everything else.

I would like to have done the plugs sooner, but it kept getting pushed back. They will be getting done with around 107K on them.

Here's a loaded answer! At 60K I believe they also ask you if you want the power steering and brake fluid flushed.

Okay....uhh yeah, you guys were right. Price was too good to be true. They want about $500 for the 60k service, to include tranny flush, oil and filter change, fuel filter, clean TB and MAF, tire rotation and balance, and inspect everything else. Might be a few other minor things in there.

They want an ADDITIONAL $450 to $850 for a plug change depending on how many break.

So that's about $1,000 for needed maintenance. Not to mention I'm throwing emmission codes, so I may need some repairs but haven't had it looked at yet.

I got the funny inclination to maybe consider a trade today. I'm "possibly" looking at the 2011 w/ the 3.5L V6 Ecoboost. What to do...what to do......

If you're mechanically inclined and not afraid to get dirty..... goto the how to section of the forum and learn how to do the service yourself.....imo

I am fairly inclined and definitely not afraid of dirt. Issue is time more than anything.

Time = Money. If you can do the work yourself it's not unusual to "make" $40/hr+ for the work. A new truck means 6 more years of payments then you get to buy another truck or start doing repairs.

$1,000 for maint/repairs is a LOT cheaper than a new truck !!

Since my truck was used I had all fluids, plugs changed at 50K miles.

Tranny flush, coolant flush, rear end services, plugs, throttle body cleaning.

I change my own fuel filter and clean my MAF sensor. I think my bill was around $600 because the plugs were fouled pretty bad.

If the plugs have been changed from the OEM factory ones it shouldn't be that high. It would be easy to change yourself. If you still have factory ones in....have the dealership do it IMO...after doing it yourself, you will have been glad to pay $400 to watch someone do it.
