Sorry to kinda hijack the thread but I have a question. I have a 2007 Ford F150 HD. I have a Volant CAI in mine aswell. Without the ram air scoop add-on. I also have a Edge CTS running the 93 octance canned tune. Am I running lean? Is there something that can tell me if I am or can you feel it when you drive? I think the truck runs great and has had a vast increase in performane. Thanks for any help you guys give.

Hey.

Lean = highly likely
Only way to tell - direct measurements with a wideband
Can't feel it - no CEL may be set, no codes.
'Vast' increase in perf? Nope - that's a placebo effect - again - only timeslips will tell the tale.
5-8 HP is not a noticeable increase felt by a butt-dyno. Sorrry.

Suggest you read through ALL the info and links above. Then call a couple of tuners.

It is possible you could be running somewhat lean, but Ford had changed the fuel/air flow mix in the tunes from 2006 on. Occasionally, one will run lean but not many. Many of the 2005s would do so and most all 2004 came from the factory in a near lean condition.

The Edge tunes are specifically written for the stock intake, which is a CAI, just has a silencer built in. You get very little performance increase from an aftermarket intake, unless you have a custom tune to take advantage of it. They look neat and sound good, though. The Edge is where you are seeing most of your performance gains.

I have ordered some custom tunes from PHP. They didn't come in yet. Would getting tunes for the Volant decrease the chance of running lean? New to this scene and don't know much.

Thanks again.

Yea, I kinda figured most of the gains were from the Edge. I really just got he volant for the look. But I did order a tune to take advantage of it. Hopefully that helps because I'm sure no one will buy a used volant, much less a new one after all of the controversy. Thanks for your input.

He didn't use a obdII reader and I'm sure he knows what he is talking about he has been a mechanic for 35 years and is it a know fact that every 5.4l v8 runs lean with a CAI... Jesus Calm yourself I am planning on getting custom tunes anyway for the most power out of the truck with the intake....

Please, for your own good and dignity, do what The Man says. That whole 'teach a man to fish' thing?

^ That's quite gracious of you, sir...and refreshing to see.

I appreciate your wishes for a nice day and respectfully wish you the same.

Now, you've got some reading to do! A wealth of information in the links posted by MGD.

No worries - I'm calm.

Now, that's what I'm talking about!

All BS'in aside (and that's ALL it was, and shame on anyone who takes me seriously, lol)...

Could you ask him to elaborate on the procedures he used?

I'm genuinely curious, as I can do this myself as well - just wanted to compare notes.

Thanks!

MGD

PS - this is NOT restricted to 04-06 trucks - ANY model with a slot-style MAF is subject to the same risks.

I've been a "mechanic" myself for ~20 yrs. I work professionally for the US Navy as a Nuclear Mechanic

That doesn't qualify me to diagnose if a vehicle is running lean or not. Ive got 3 scanners/code readers and not a single one can tell if motor is running lean or not. I guess I could data log the truck and interpolate using other data

Want to know the status of the motor? Plug a Wideband in and watch it. No other legit way to know otherwise

And yes, it is a KNOWN fact that 04/05's will run lean with a CAI. Very restrictive PCM fuel strategies.

06-10 models not do much, but it still happens.

Bottom line, you are ignoring sound advice from people who are trying to help you not try your motor. I suggest you listen, but you seem determined that they're wrong. Good luck with that new motor!

I dont know exactly what software he used but he did tell me he ran it on a dyno..

Does anyone happen to know how much the custom tunes are for a 2005?
